Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Ive got a new project were fish replace dinosaurs. Giant bipedal sharks with theropod body plans are the top predatores. Remoras have evolved into Pachycephalysaurus like creatures. What coud replace ceratopsians stegasaurs ankylosaurs and sauropods

I'm saying they did. They go through the stages gradually and after a few million years they evolve the traits.

If its in water then its just normal fish.
<_< umm, ok....
Projects and concepts that I have stewing around
Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients)
Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals.
Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day.
Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent.
Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold.
The Park- ???
Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth.
World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies.
The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems..

By which point they would no longer be fish. Heck, if that's the way you want to go, then WE'RE fish!

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

@Fakey, stop being a prick man, i thought you were better than being a dickhead to some 11 year old kid who's asking questions.
Personally i don't think the idea is likely, but with evolutiion not much is likely. i don't think its impossible, but, as has been stated before, the end result woulb be quite different from the beginning. UT, maybe you should develop a project where amphibians never evolved, in their place is an alternate group descended from sharks?

Are you plausible?

Okay, getting back to the original topic:

I'm not sure I follow. You're saying that the dinosaurs go extinct and are replaced by fish and sharks. Somewhere in there you said that these newcomers stay sharks/fish/etc. but are now theropods. I'm confused.

1: How do the legs come about? What precisely are the evolutionary interims to get from a gilled, legless, aquatic ecology to air-breathing, land walking predators and prey?

2: Setting the nitpicking cladistics argument aside, you're claiming that they're still aquatic or something. What are you talking about here?

Clear these two points up once and for all so we can get some forward momentum in this project. It's 4 pages long and has consisted of beating a dead, dead horse.

The fish dont evolve into amphibians, reptiles, mammals. They stay fish.

The back fins grown and start to evolve into stumps which gradually become legs.

The creatures still have gills and can go under water if need be.

If they grow legs, ULTIMATE THEROPOD then they're no longer fish in the taxonomic sense. They are a new form of life that is, based on your description, amphibious. They may resemble sharks or fish, but this will only be a resemblance based on heritage; it will not be a shark/fish with legs, it will be a creature whose ancestors were fish or sharks.

Also, in addition to the legs for land adaptation, they will no doubt have to develop lungs as well, as only having gills will cause them to suffocate in the air. This is only the tip of the iceberg for the evolutionary changes your hypothetical fish will experience while developing into dinosaur analogues.

And, this idea of fish dinosaurs is just ABSURD.

We appreciate constructive criticism around here, Admantus.
