| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I wish I had bought just one more pumpkin, I had a great idea for a Borg-o-Lantern. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Some mother fucker just stole my three year old cousin's pumpkin off our porch. What's wrong with kids today? That's seriously the third time this week someone has vandalized/stolen our pumpkins. |

Uhuh! Maybe it's restricting the 'right to roam'...But at the end of the day people's homes are a private premises. With that said, what about parents supervising their kids, dressed up in the spirit of things? Can the7y be arrested too? Frankly, I hate seeing Australian kids trick or treating. The adoption of American culture via the media. Ugh! So vile. Why can't we just be us? I'm also anti-Halloween in general. When I get married, or live alone or whatever, let it be known there'll be a 'NO TRICK OR TREATERS' sign on my door. Yes. Indeed-dee! |

Why are Australian children trick-or-treating vile? I mean, if they want to do that, why not? I mean, I look at my country... trick-or-treating isn't at all a big thing here. But I see no reason to force or restrict children from doing something. |

Edit: we know there is Halloween, but we never consider it as important and we don't have that pumpkin craze or spooky stuff just some minor dress-ups and unimportant festivals in big THeme Parks plus no Trick or Treating Edited by Cephylus, Nov 1 2010, 08:56 AM.

It's hard to explain. But a lot of Australians feel the same way. Part of it is the fact that most people don't want an abundance of random kids (one group after the next) knocking on their door requesting lollies* for a holiday that people have never bothered with here until maybe 5 years ago when American cultural practises started sneaking in. In fact, a forum I used to go to years ago, comprised mainly of 20-something's used to have a yearly treat where they not only complained about trick or treaters, but also bragging about swearing at them, telling them to go away. Etc. From people I know in person who get a lot of them, that's the general attitude. Right there. *I mean, they're children. Freaking hard to say no to kids, believe me. I spoil the hell out of my niece. EDIT: Oh, and I didn't call the children vile. I called the fact it's being introduced as a legit occasion here and the fact everyone's supposed to be okay with it and expected to participate vile. Last night, I was driving home from a relatives house and saw a number of groups of kids trick or treating. As I saw some approach a door I just couldn't help but feel sorry for the people who live there, and I mean, to an extent the kids, as from what I hear there's actually very few people who give them anything. Oh, and the parents who send their kids out trick or treating. Well, I more pity them... Edited by crueldunya0000, Nov 1 2010, 09:31 AM.

Parents can dress up, sure. They make adult costumes for a reason. As long as they aren't without kids, on your private property asking for candy. The law is mostly to discourage overage people from going out and trying to get something. Responsible parents aren't likely to get into trouble. And by arrested, I mean 'taken down to the station and fined." Probably should have made that clear. |
