| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. tWhat do I think is wrong with society? I dunno, I don't get out and bother with society that much, but I guess I think people are too serious about everything that doesn't involve the death of another person and not serious enough with the things that do. But them being like tat probably is the result of desensitization and not actually being aware of what they're talking about, people get so up in arms over masculinity when you can just shoot them up with some chemical that shuts off their little Y based switches and turn their nuts into ovaries. Or dogs, my gawd people go batshit about dogs, pray your death is painless if you were to beat a dog. Right there, people are more willing to let another person die than a dog. It sickens me. They view money as something worth fighting over when what they should be fighting over is human labour, because that is what money represents, how much a person is willing to work for it and how much the people actually value the coin. We could make a manned mission to Mars for free if we actually wanted to... But it's understandable, the whole money thing... except that people killed themselves over an economic collapse. That is nonsense. What the hell is the difference between yesterday and today other than the numbers and the board are now in the negatives? If everyone simply ignored them and continued through their day, doing work for the sake of work, shit would still get done. Money is essentially just IOUs that you can pool together into bigger IOUs or break into smaller IOUs. Basically just the seriousness thing is what's wrong with society, that and those fucking assholes. You know who I'm talking about, the pricks who just think they can pick someone and start fucking with them because they can, start mocking them and talking shit at them. Especially when they have their little gang with them to back them up if the person actually wants to retaliate, those little shits should be rounded up and publicly flogged. Oh, also, the crippling hold oil companies seem to have on everything, they should be energy companies but no, they have to stick to the old stuff and trick anybody who tries to produce an alternative into selling them their copyrights then hiding away the designs for eternity while the world chokes and withers on their ********. I don't see why that word is censored, billshut then. Along with those stupid pricks would be people who are hateful of other human groups who were born into those groups and are fairly incapable of changing, that means RAGING homophobes, feminazis, STRONG racists, misogynists, midgit haters, and richies who hate and pick on the poor kids and gutter rats who hate the rich kids because of their money and possessions. I also strongly feel that a problem are people intolerant of others beliefs in the sense that they want those believers removed solely because of what they believe, take those bastard bible thumpers shouting crap about muslims worshipping the devil or that wickens should be kicked out of school, or atheists who say all religious folk should be shot -ALTHOUGH I DO THINK THAT IF THE PERSON THEMSELVES ARE INTOLERANT DUE TO THEIR BELIEFS AND THAT IS WHY THEY HATE THEM THAT IS A DIFFERENT MATTER, AND SHOULD BE VIEWED AS AN INDIVIDUAL TRAIT AND NOT A GROUP TRAIT- so that the world would be a better and more peaceful place. But enough about my preaching tolerance since I myself am a hypocrite. We could always travel down the road of how stupid humanity seems to be with their resources, you want to give people jobs? Set up jobs rooting through garbage and picking out every little thing that can be recycled... Of course we have machines that can pick out most of it I guess... but along that nasty green path I also want to rant about how people are so fucking reliant and dependent on distributors for their goods. Except people in cities, they're cool in my book, partially, I mean their's such things as city gardens where you can grow your food. So basically, stop hating, stop being so gawdammed seriALL, and stop wasting shit. |

- Unwillingness to accept consequences or take responsibility for actions. - Unwillingness/inability to recognize that other parties with which we communicate may not understand the full context of our words (and vice versa), thus leading to misunderstandings. - The need to fill every moment with work, activities, productivity, or even just noise. - Conversely, the tendency to let life go by in fruitless, idle pursuits. - Vice. This is just a random smattering that came to my mind. They seem contradictory, but don't apply to everyone all of the time. If we can be more clear with those around us (a difficult task), own up to the mistakes that we make, and endeavor to make less of them then I think the world would be a much better place. Edit: Oh, were we supposed to have a more emotional approach to this? Do I need to redo my response? What exactly are you looking for with this, seascorpion? I'm just ranty. Owning up to mistakes is seriously something that would help, people have been killed because others weren't willing to say they messed up and accept their consequence. Of course those people who were unwilling were monsters anyway, treaty others like pawns in a game of chess, numbers on a board... To be honest I sometimes feel that the only thing with real value is the connection with another person. Of course then you get hungry and eat that other person in the famine, but whatever. |

I agree that real, uplifting human connection (I qualify in order to exclude abusive situations) is of paramount importance. seascorpion, if you're interested, I stumbled upon this Wikipedia article that may provide some insight. My personal favorite part of the article is the part about Easter Island. |

There isn't one or a few things wrong with the world... there are problems, relating to different and unique situations, that make up the failings and successes of society. |
| A hard mathematical figure provides a sort of enlightenment to one's understanding of an idea that is never matched by mere guesswork. | |

Well i pretty much see humanity as doomed... unless we radically reform democracy and introduce far more radical politicians i am sick of Blair and Obama clones. Also i think that logic should be the only thing governing us Humanity must lose part of its soul to achieve glory then we can claw back our conscience. Also i think if we can do it then we should. Opposing new tech is just plain stupid and inhibiting progress |

Depends what you mean by the world. If you mean the big heavy rock, then the expansion of the sun. If you mean the people on it, global warming, ecosystem collapse, insurgency, oppressive regimes, extremists in general, mobsters, popular ranters, and those who encourage brainwashing. |

Social issues, well I think our attitude to death is not good. Look at Halloween. It's supposed to be a time to reflect on death, and we've turned it into an excuse for candy and costume sex. Not that there is anything wrong with sweeties and rumpy pumpy, but we don't look at death the same way we did in the past. Many old clocks in Europe have reminders on them that every second might be your last and now we try to ignore death until it's too late. I also think society's attitude to war and the military is all wrong. In the past we assume our boys were always fighting against terrible people, now we think whenever someone puts on a uniform they become soulless empty shells. Neither is true, but I think war, while very nasty business is sometimes necessary and we don't have the stomach for it any more. People go on and on about how terrible things are for people in various parts of the world, but if we were to do something about it, say invade Burma and topple the junta, or oust Mugabe from power, people would never stop complaining. I dread to think what would happen if we ever faced a serious enemy. I'm worried about what will happen after technology means that there are almost no jobs that can't be done better or cheaper by machines or software. Maybe we'll get to a Star Trek-like utopia where everyone works for pleasure or the betterment of mankind. But I foresee a future where marketing consultants are all that stands between civilization and chaos. Where your job depends on the fact that someone can convince people that a taxi driven by a person, or hand made food, or a human staffed call centre is better than the (superior in every measurable way) service provided by the technological alternative. I'm a realist but sometimes I wish we could just go back to farming. Read here for more info. http://www.cracked.com/article_18817_5-reasons-future-will-be-ruled-by-b.s..html Oh and gender neutralizing of language is something I'm not overly keen on. I agree with it in principle, but mankind sounds so much better than humanity. Edited by lamna, Oct 27 2010, 02:53 PM.

I like the idea of becoming more self-sustaining... and whenever given the choice between self-check out and the employee I always pick the employee. I pretty much have a hatred for machines outside of work that people can't do and mass production. |

I always go for the person to. Mostly because I thought the self checkout things were credit or debit card only. That's another problem. People spending money they don't have. |

But then there'll be ramifications. Oh, consumer-oriented cuilture and adverts. Though our adverts aren't as bad as the USonian ones. |
