Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Do you think that if people used there arms enough their arms could possibly support them if we developed flight?

I wonder if the suit concept can be taken further and make a pair of big pterosaur-like wings on the suit that are supported by the arms and long lightweight bars. It might be hard to flap but you could soar for a very long distance.
yes that would be a great idea but what would they be made of?

Flying humans are implausible for several reasons. First, think how fast they'd have to beat their hearts.
Second, consider the largest flying animals yet evolved- quetzalcoatlus and argentavis. Both probably weighed less than a hundred kilos while having a wing measurement of 11 and ~7m respectively. Mammalian tissue would need about a hundred million years of biological evolution to reach a point where they had as little density and appropriate physiological co-ordination, but then you might as well make them smaller.

…for a 170-lb human to achieve any type of flight, he or she would need wings with approximately 20 square feet of surface area.

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Do albatrosses have especially high heart rates?

Rather high, but they do gliding and whatnot and they'd been preparing for 100 million years.

Wasn't there something like this in All Tomorrows? Of course, the Qu did things to humans that no sane human genetic engineer would.

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

There were loads of fliers in All Tomorrows, but many of them lost their brain power and were incapable of regaining it, either they kept flight or kept their brain, most kept flight.

One though had a special heart that allowed them to have both, unfortunately they had a lifespan of only about 20 years.
Oh Fine.

Oh hi you! Why don't you go check out the finery that is SGP??

The third stage, the "ass-blaster", is introduced in Tremors 3: Back to Perfection. Shriekers turn into ass-blasters, which resemble their original shrieker, shedding their skin as they grow and change. They are capable of gliding with the use of red/pink-colored sail-like structures at the sides of their bodies, consisting of a semi-translucent skin supported by rigid stems and a third dorsal sail that extends from the spine down the back and tail. In order to take flight, they shake and quiver their tails and backsides and seem to be mixing two liquids which produce an explosion of flames from their rear end, similar to a Bombardier beetle's blast of acid.

That's pretty colorful :D .

What about humans living in a rotating space environment that, over time, slowly ceases to rotate? The inhabitants need to find a way to propel themselves in zero-g, and so develop large wings made of skin. It's not quite flying, but it's pretty close.
