| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Transparent eyelids like those of snakes and lizards would be fine. But if the eyes are constructed more like arthropod eyes, they'll be harder anyway. It'd be like sand trying to scratch a rock. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I was thinking of a winged serpent with scaly wings that fly's up and launches itself into the sand. when its in the sand it travails at speeds of 40km making it an excellent hunter. I call it a Gorvint. Edited by Owl Streak, Oct 9 2010, 11:41 PM.

We have those. We call them sidewinders.

I'm pretty sure sidewinders can't fly. The Gorvint wouldn't work as a snake as snakes probably wouldn't evolve powered flight, maybe some kind of future lizard could work. |

There's a kind of deep sea fish with its eyes encased in its transparent head... http://gconnect.in/gc/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/seethrough_fish.jpg Maybe your creature could have something like that to protect its eyes from the sand. |
