| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. 300 was very surreal, which i think worked. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

Or an Australian as a William Wallace. Or an open field as Stirling Bridge. Sometimes though the choice of actors is so bad it's good. John Wayne as Genghis Khan anyone? As for using strange locations for films, generally it's done because it's cheaper. When you are based in a places for months on end with a huge film crew filming in Toronto rather than New York makes a lot of sense. Speaking of which, anyone notice the Scottish veldt in Doomsday? Still, it's a pretty fun film that. My only gripes are that the Mad Max guys and the Medievalists should have had a battle, and Eden Sinclair should have worn an eyepatch more. More of Prime Minister Bashir would have been nice too. Anyone else a fan of the "Britain has gone to shit but it's the only way we stayed alive" Genre? Needs a shorter name that, but you know what I mean. Children of Men, V* the aforementioned Doomsday. *Though the film kinda forgot about aspect, and the Americans missed the Guy Fawkes symbolism and it was just "Yay revolution everything is super now". I like 300 for the kicking people into pits o' death, I dislike it because back then, Sparta was facists and they were pedophilles. |

Technically, they were an oligarchy. And the homosexual thing was just a part of the society. They were inducted into the Agogee at 9, put through brutal training, and then paired with an older man at 12. It wasn't considered pedophilia then, simple. You think the mandatory homosexuality was bad, don't even get me started on the Agogee training. |

Yes it does. Fascism is a very specific kind of political system. It can include an oligarchy, but it's no more an integral part of fascism than it is of communism. Indeed when it come to economics, Fascism is supposed to be a meritocracy, with those who are good at it looking after the economy rather than established classes. Unless you are using fascist as an insult like some kind of commie, in which case it looses all meaning. I disliked 300 for the villainous treatment of the Persian Empire. Athens had made itself a vassal of Persia to protect itself from Sparta, then they refused to pay taxes so all of Greece was threatened. Hardly a heroic motivation for war, helping your former enemy's tax evasion. Still the rest of the film was pretty fun. |

They're not a movie, but the cut scenes sure do make it feel like one. The Metal Gear Solid series. |

The first Starship Trooper film is one of my favourite films, the second one, not so much. I'v seen pornography better shot than that. The very ending was pretty good though. It's a shame as the premise was pretty good, a siege with just the bugs and the MI would have been pretty good. Third film was an major improvement, but nowhere near as good as the first. The Iraq War references and all the religion stuff detracted from the fun. I've seen a good chunk of Aliens, but not the whole thing. Been meaning to do that some time. The Riddick film are good too. I'll take what I can get, but anything about a space navy would be really cool. Honor Harrington is my favourite series of novels, Starship Operators is my favourite Anime and the Dominion War was my favourite story arc in all of Trek. It's part of the reason I was a little disappointed when I found out that Caprica wasn't going to be about the First Cylon War. Edited by lamna, Oct 11 2010, 12:39 PM.

John Carpenter's The Thing was an excellent horror movie. It had great psychological horror elements along with disturbing imagery. Its truly a horror classic. |
