| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

It was for a while. And to be fair to Mr Commie Rat was hunting a US invasion that never happened, though their was a troopship in the area. I'd love the make a video game set in my Pax Germania universe during the Conquest of America by the German Empire. America gets caught with it's pants down, a little like at Pearl Harbour. Only it's not the destruction of a large number of ships in Pearl Harbour, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, Minneapolis, Norfolk, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. are attacked with nuclear weapons, the Mexicans invade Texas, Florida gets attacked by ballistic missiles AND a lot of ships get destroyed at Pearl Harbour. There are three chapters, the first one as a German solider (Jewish by the way) fighting your way though New York, which has been bombed to hell and on too the Great Lakes where you have to man a flak cannon and shoot down an American plane. The story then picks up with the pilot, who survives the crash and meets up with a rag-tag milita who pull back across the great plains, crossing some titanic tank battles where they are at it. German Special Forces come after then and the milita is pinned down in a mansion. A Spanish woman screaming bloody murder firing a LMG from the hip with a group of Canadian volunteers. America surrenders, and she has to fight her way back to Canada, or take as many Huns with her to the grave as she can.

I've got an idea for something Animal Farmy, in fact several ideas, such as using factory farms as a metaphor for the holocaust, of humans starting logging in brazil as a metaphor for the discovery of ,and violation following, Australia and the Aboriginal people |

If you wanted to use natural world metaphors for complex human issues then a introduced species might be a better metaphor for the issues faced by Australian Aborigines. Of course that does not really work too well either and implies that the natives are not as good as as the white settlers and convicts, and ignores the culpability of individuals, because introduced species are entirely blameless. They are just doing their own thing. It works okay for the convicts and the diseases, but with the stolen generations and the Black Line, and so on it just breaks down. And only one thing should be compared to the Holocaust. The Holocaust. Animal Farm works because the farm is just a convenient setting. Mr Soviet Hating Commie was not trying to expose the injustices of farming, he was putting the Russian Revolution and Stalinism in a familiar and understandable setting. What you seem to want to do is smush together two issues that clash nastily. |

Agreed 110%. I'll stuff that quote in the face of any PETA-esque I come across again, who tries to use that analogy.

Well I got it from Richard "The Dick" Coughlan, who has said the same thing of slavery. I have also had a idea for a Mecha series, after WW1 the Soviet Union extends all the way to the Pyrenees and includes a large chunk of French Africa. The USA fell to Communism in the 1930's, but they are more anarchic and a bit nicer than the USSR. The British Empire split in two, abut like the Roman Empire. The Western Part including Britain itself (but not Canada, which the Americans conquered/liberated) became a Republic, as did the Ireland. Both are allied with the Comintern, but not exactly thrilled about it. The Eastern "British" Empire is run from Delhi and is part of an Anti-Communist Alliance with the Roman Empire (Just the Kingdom of Italy with a new name, Albania and bits of French Africa) Japan, the Union for the Liberty of the Americas (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and allies), China and various smaller powers. In 2059, the USSR's economy is falling apart so then invade Japanese Siberia making use of new HCV's (Humanoid Combat Vehicle). In the hands of a normal person a HCV is slow pretty much useless on the battlefield. Engines (A corruption of Next Generation, with became N-Gen, and then engine) specially modified people have to be created, which is a problem for the Anti-Communists as their programs have not been going on very long. Japan's oldest prototype Engines are only 22 years old and Britain and Italy only have 17 and 16 year old Engines respectively. How the USSR, which was behind in HCV technology got so many is a mystery. Spoiler: click to toggle Here is a world map at the start of the series. http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/5553/comintrun.png Edited by lamna, Oct 24 2010, 07:53 AM.

On the subject of stories starring animals, I've got one that's been rolling around in my head. It's kinda childish, though; I've gotten Dreamworks in mind to release it. Basically, it surrounds the exploits of an octopus who's able to walk around on land thanks to a fishbowl he wears on his head. Mostly, the little guy uses this newfound ability to steal things that capture his interest, like souvenirs, shiny belongings, etc. However, when a favorite keeper of his is charged with theft, the octopus has to find some way to clear her name. |

Indeed. A little like Ponyo. And I don't hate the US. I just think it was a mistake. Besides they would be sympathetic villeins. Think Spanish Civil War era anarchist community rather than Stalinist state. Plus look! They are much bigger. I have made some alternate history where the USA does not collapse, never exists, becomes evil or splits apart. My Valkyrie-Vengeance World has a different WW2 where Isoroku Yamamoto lived and Hitler died. Rommel, Patton and Monty end up fighting against the SS and Luftwaffe and Soviet Union. Dunno what would be good for it, a game, a film or a book?
