| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Sorry for replying to an old thread, but: -zoic come from Greek and means "life", so Paleozoic is "ancient life", Mesozoic is "middle life" and so on; -cene is also Greek and means "recent", so Cenozoic is "recent life", Miocene is "less recent", Pliocene is "more recent" and so on; -"Homo", as in "Homo sapiens", is Latin and actually means "man". It's also the root for "homicide". The root for "homosexual" is instead Greek and means "same", but it's another word. Edited by Dromaeosaurus, Jan 15 2011, 12:51 PM.

As the Greek guy of the forum, I should have posted all that a long time ago. At least, I can confirm that you are absolutely right. Zoic comes from the Greek word "zo-E", that means "life". Paleo means "old", Meso means "middle", Ceno (kae-nOh) means "new". Homo- (ho-mOh-) is a prefix in Greek that roughly means "-same". It's all Greek to me you know!

The word 'man' is derived from the Proto-Germanic "mannaz" from which the German "Mann" comes... |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |
