| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I think JohnFaa has it right. Use cladistics. ![]() Pando, perhaps you are combining cladistics and Linnaean there? |
|
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I just use modern taxonomy with a change that birds aren't a Class. That's what I use for Earth taxonomy. I could start using the monophyly cladistics, but the paraphyly and polyphyly repels me from using it. |

True Cladistics, perhaps? I sound kind of militant here. Anyway, Cladistics is always free to be updated. With Linnaean, all sorts of shifts gotta happen. |

As I said, it's all a matter of preference, and if you feel one is better than the other, feel free to use it. Let's not make this some sort of divisive politicized issue... Sorry, I've been hearing that kind of crap all around campus today... Where's that smiley that puts a gun to the head? |

If you stick with Cladistics, you don't have to deal with stuff like "Kingdom" Protista. |

You don't have to do that with taxonomy either.

I think this is the leading new taxonomy at the moment. Domain Bacteria Bacteria Domain Archaea Archaea Domain Eukarya Amoebozoa — most lobose amoeboids and slime moulds Opisthokonta — animals, fungi, choanoflagellates, etc. Rhizaria — Foraminifera, Radiolaria, and various other amoeboid protozoa Archaeplastida (or Primoplantae) — Land plants, green algae, red algae, and glaucophytes Chromalveolata — Stramenopiles (or Heterokonta), Haptophyta, Cryptophyta (or cryptomonads), and Alveolata Excavata — Various flagellate protozoa |
