| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. i had this thought for a long while now. what if the human race evolved alongside creatures of dinosaurian proportions? and if so, how will it affect us today? leave your responses below. |

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems.. | |

i'm just sayin. how will it affect us today. will we have discovered flight earlier? would we have domesticated giant herbivores for battle, food, ETC |

Dude, dinosaurs and other giant animals kept us small. If something the size of dinosaurs ever evolved alongside us, you can bet we'll still be small mouse-sized primates. We're lucky enough to be considered megafauna. |

Hmm well human civilization would be isolated into compounds. We would probably be much more warlike due to the harsh nature of our surroundings. Each little safezone would probably be very different culturally from others. The only contact to each other would probably be traders who would probably look mre like an armoured company than a bunch of merchants. I wrote a short story set in a world like this....the bastard of an english teacher kept it and never gave it back

Actually it wasn't because of their size, but because of their significance within every ecosystem. The giants did not keep us from growing, rather, it was the small species that kept us small. Listing something as dinosaurian proportion is not a good unit of measurement at all, we could go from the tiniest Microraptor, to the largest Argentinosaurus. Had just the largest of sauropods persisted (it's an example, they would've been the first to go in any such case) mammals (or crocdilians) would've grown in size and ecological significance Though I will say we wouldn't have evolved at all, even with small changes in the past the present would be significantly altered, so rather than being human, we'd be some sort of other mammalian intelligence

How about giving an exact size? Because depending on the time and place even on the "mainland" you can have 12 meter long "dwarfs" like Dicraeosaurus or more than 30 meter long giants like Supersaurus. And just in case you didn´t know, during the Pliocene our ancestors in our own time had to face some pretty big animals; think of Deinotherium which may have weighed over 10 tons and may have been over 5 meters tall. |

Honestly, if big animals were around not only it is still likely we would evolve, but we would make them extinct anyway |

Yeah... there is better chance of humans making large organisms extinct than large animals making humans extinct.... |
