| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. ok, i'm new here so don't kill me here. anyways, me and my friend have had this idea of predicting what earth would be in 100 million years time. 1. part of euraisa and north america would be connected, while the other half of euraisa would be seperated by a shallow sea. south america would one again be an island, and africa has been split into 2 parts. australia and antartica would once again be connected. 2. on the southern continent, keas, being intellegent and curious, rose to the nitche of top predator when their main compeditors, the mammals, have died out, and the apperance of gargantuan herbivores that provided a food source. (this is my first time.) in the pelagic regions of the oceans, fish are stalked by swift, ocean going salamanders. these predators take the nitche of the marlinsof the present day. ok, that's all for me today. if anyone wants to help me with this, just reply. |

Projects and concepts that I have stewing around Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients) Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals. Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day. Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent. Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold. The Park- ??? Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth. World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies. The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems..

Hmmmm. Interesting continental layout. But I'm not sure on the fauna like the giant keas. How do mammals die out, and what are the giant herbivores? And how the heck do salamanders develop salt tolerance and take over the oceans? Please explain more. But I am happy to help you with your project as are many of us, so do explain. |

Before humans came to New Zealand, kea didn't face competition with mammals because there were few, if any, non-marine native mammals, so why would the situation be different 100 million years from now? There must be something more than the extinction of mammals. |

maybe the sea going salamanders could be coastal, scavanging desendants of the cane toad? also, the giant herbivores are mammals, but i'm not sure what kind. or, maybe the keas hunt like a pack of wolves, since there aren't any mammals to compete with them. the climate is cold, but not as cold as today, making it the climate for the gang killers.

First of all, welcome to the site! Now, as ForbiddenParadise64 asked, how do you intend for the mammalian predators to die out on the Southern Continents, if mammalian herbivores still exist? Also, aside from the problem of salt tolerance, why wouldn't the salamanders be outcompeted by sharks? And, surely, if any normally freshwater species was going to become oceanic, the crocodile would be a better candidate? |

actually, the salamanders are similar to koolasuchus and sea amphibians, but with a more lethargic lifestyle. and, the and, the occupy a different nitce. they take the role of giant anglerfish, (no, not the deap sea variaty.) resting on the sea floor, waiting for a suitable prey item to wander by, and, it swallows it whole. if anybody wants to give me ideas or help me with existing stuff, reply or email me. i have another idea. on a group of islands named galapagos 2, the climate is hot and wet enough to support giant predatory hawks and gargantuan herbivorous creatures. Cyfarchion! So, we start with, perhaps, fire salamanders. Then we make them about 3m long, and much more heavily built? Their arms grow, perhaps, more webbed and the fingers become more spindly. They go down onto the sea floor, and their upward-facing eyes stare up until they see a fish or whatever. They then shoot up and grab it. Well, salamanders are going to find it massively hard to adapt to seagoing life. Possible ways of circumventing this- -Breathe air by going to the surface -replace cutaneous mucus with dermal bone or collagen -reduce limb length -reproduce on land. As you can sea, most amphibious vertebrates are better placed for this. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed."

Diplocaulus leads a lifestyle more similiar to these 'uns. But why salamanders, instead of crocs or other, better placed critters? |

because, crocs just can't do that. and, the salamander will re develop gills. and, the gang killing parrots, look somewhat between a cross of a kea and a hawk

First of all, welcome to SE! Second, do I need to tell you what's wrong with that? Gills are lost and unless you have neotenic salamanders they can't re-develop gills. |

Then they'll have to re-evolve reproduction. ![]() Crocs would prohibit salamanders from reaching this niche, by filling the intermediary stages. |
