Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I'm going back to basics.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, while more well known for being the single greatest artistic achievement in the history of humanity, is also a fascinating work of Speculative Evolution.

Taking place some time in the future, earth in Gurren Lagann is largely filled with arid plains, with occasional oases punctuating the dryness. In these oases, amazing diversity is discovered.

The first animal seen, the pigmole is an interesting creature. As a juvenile, it fills the niche of a mole, a small burrower with poor eyesight. As a fully grown adult however, the pigmole is a far different being:

Larger than a human, the adult pigmole fills the niche of a large boar, rooting around with their large snouts for plant matter. Extreme adaptations like this appear toi be common in the world of Gurren Lagann.

The Rabbidile is a large carnivore, evolving from lagomorph into a form superficially reminiscent of that of a crocodile or alligator. The rabbidile is a perfect example of the adaptability of mammalian body forms. An apex predator, the rabbidile has nothing to fear but human hunters.

On the other side of the fence is the grape hippo, an animal that is preyed upon by all, and is nearly defenseless. A symbiosis between plant and animal in a single organism, the grape hippo rarely moves, and sprouts wooden, root like growths in order to support its bulk. Pictured is a grape hippo in full seed.

Other future animals, such as a squirrel descendant fully capable of flying, and a canine with a unique method of locomotion are to be found as well.

Beyond simple darwinian evolution, deliberate engineering is to be found as well, such as armadillos augmented to a level of human intelligence:

As well as humans augmented with animal DNA sequences, plus a nearly impenetrable reference to DNA bases:

Truly, Gurren Lagann is one of the most scientifically sound and intellectually stimulating television productions of our life times.

This topic may not have been entirely serious.

Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements in a way that influences and affects the senses, emotions, and/or intellect.

Under this definition it is, and it is the greatest. :P

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

How'd you puzzle that one out Sherlock? :P I just made all that info up, and I'm fairly sure that's the only picture of it on the net.
