Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

For some people, the inclusion of grammatical rules is a sign of education and, by extension, intelligence. For others it is a clumsy and outmoded system of communication; the more simplified such a system is the better it is for some.

Some just like to get things posted quickly. Chatroom habit and the like, I'd imagine.

Honestly, I just don't like using incorrect grammar, myself. Nothing for it, just so much against the rest.

Why the sudden attention to it?

Cause it's been on the rise?

Capitalizing is important grammar, don't see why some people don't use it unless they use translators.

I've just been noticing it more and more, perhaps it is increasing.

The advent of phone texting has certainly strengthened the tendency to ignore capitalization.

And while grammatical rules like capitalizing do contribute to the communicative process, there is plenty of evidence to show that it's not a crucial part of English. For example, TYPING SOMETHING IN ALL CAPS SUGGESTS LOUD OR FORCEFUL EXPRESSION, but in the strictest sense that is a peripheral concern. Where the problem arises is when it is interpreted to mean what it's socially accepted to represent when that was not the case.

Why Can't I Hold All These Mongols?

I rarely use capitals/correct grammar, its probably because of habits from other sites/facebook/msn/chatrooms

That's completely understandable, seascorpion.

I can't help but fear, though. I mean, while there are certainly environments where strict grammatical accuracy isn't important, there are places where it can make all the differences. The ability to clearly and competently express oneself formally is a valuable tool. Believe it or not, employers look at those kinds of things.

I don't get why it happens here though, I mean this is a forum where you think out your response before you post it, you're not constantly sending messages.

For the most part, that is the case. I would be thrilled if more members of the community made an effort to do this. Projects would explode with successful ideas, and flame wars would dwindle and maybe even disappear.

See, that's a perfectly valid explanation, Silverexi. If somebody asked me to maintain perfect Spanish grammar and punctuation I'd do my best, and probably wouldn't do that bad, but I know I'd make mistakes.

I make sure all my posts are properly constructed, but typoes can just spoil the whoel thing.

That said, i have indeed seen a decline in capitalisation. Whether i should be worried i'm not sure.

Oh, and i rarely capitalise 'i' as a matter of speed.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.
