| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. They are major herbivores in some ecosytems and some like Whitetailed Deer are amazinginly adaptable for large animals... |

Why not deer? ![]() Welcome to the forum, Alloclaw. ![]() Whilst I am not an expert in this field, I think that the survival of deer depends on when humans go extinct (or leave this planet - effectively the same thing for the purposes of this question). It also depends on whether humans preserve the natural habitats of the deer, or whether, if their habitats are destroyed, there are other habitats that they can easily adapt into. Canis Lupis suggested a tiny dwarf deer species that lives in the 71st century, having survived even though all other ungulates were extinct, and even persevering through several centuries of hunting (they were viewed as pests). |

Oh! Well, in that case, their future appears much brighter. However, there may not be all that much evolution from their current appearance. If humans disapear in five years time, a few centuries down the line and most of our architecture will be gone, meaning that countryside and urban areas alike will eventually return to their "natural" state. But, apart from a few extinctions, all the other species alive now will be able to recover as well, meaning that evolution will, essentially, carry on as if we hadn't existed, minus a few extinctions. This means that, in order to project the evolution of the deer into the future, you're going to have to take into consideration all the other species alive today that share the deers' habitat. |

Quite well, I should imagine, if they are anything like the Muntjac deer we get over here that were intorduced from Asia. If they are thriving now, then they should thrive in five years time. Of course, they may cause problems for native herbivores and plants. |

Crazy idea alert: this is very very unlikely to happen but what if when humans go extinct deer and antelope see the need for sapient life and evolve into deer people with hooves and horns. |

Hi,i think you find us thanks to my link on one forum I could imagine that dwarf muntjac deers could became part of europe fauna.Sure they later evolve into new species,i could imagine it more adaopted to european winters. For antelopes, there is few introduced species in USA,they could later evolve into more forms, sure,if they survive age of man. There are also deers on islands, they could evolve into bizzare forms.(thanks to island gigantism/dwarfism or predator less enviroment..) just there was tiny megaloceros species on one mediterran island, which was adapted to rock climbing and shape of its horns was more like anlelope or goat. |

Not necessarily... after all, there are many species alive today that have the potential for sapience... apes, for instance, or corvids. |
