| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I preferred Prehistoric Park. How many other times do people dress a jeep up to spar with a prepubescent triceratops. The book gives hand waves, the movie demands unrationalized violence. |

Well, it's not like they would have any other environment to compare it to...
Pretty much, I'd far rather watch something like Prehistoric Park, although I must say that I find the absurdities of Jurassic Park amusing, and thus like with many other films, I watch it purely for entertainment value- to be entertained, by being amused by all the stuff that's wrong... But, you get that really awesome feeling, when someone finally gets shit right. I mean, spaceflight is so damn awesome, but we rarely ever get to see a spacecraft that isn't some nonsense Star Wars thing in film. Just like how dinosaurs are awesome creatures, but we hardly get to see them as anything other than monsters or nonsensical unrealistic characatures of their actual selves (though, I take that back- faux documentaries such as Walking With managed to get (more or less) realistic dinosaurs onto the small screen- then Tim Haines messed it all up with the scientific travesty that is Primeval). I mean, it's like this deleted scene of the starship from Avatar. I don't care that the ship would blow up on engine start, I don't care that the plumes are (probably) too dim, but it is... awesome. Avatar - ISV Venture Star Departs - Deleted Scene Ok, so there was Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets, a very good faux docudrama by the same production company as Walking With, but something about it was... limited. I guess, that is what you get when you try to do something space-related on a 4.5 million pound budget, but then again, what they did for 4.5 million pounds is pretty darn impressive.
Indeed. It's a monster movie with dinosaurs. Edited by T.Neo, Apr 3 2011, 04:52 PM.

I blame the movies on the mindset of the 90's. Things like Duke Nukem previaled and had Balls of Steel. Wait, I take that back. The 90's were fucking awesome. |

The 90's were the bes era of films (mostly) it was a time where we had badass directors such as Steven Spielberg.... now in our era we have Michael Bay....no comparison the 90's were awesome and i miss them. Even though i would have been a toddler ![]() And can we please stop arguing about Jurassic Park. Its a beautiful film, can you remember when you first saw that scene with the brachiosaurs in the lake and John Hammond say possibly the most wonderous words ever. And then there is that beautiful soundtrack, which i love so much that i listen to it before i go to bed. GOD DAMMIT THAT FILM MADE ME! So lets show some respect

Dinosaurs would be pretty easy to beat, just chop the mother and father dinosaurs heads of and put bombs in them. Be careful not to get any blood on you though. |

Anybody what to make a Prehistoric/Jurassic Park topic? I think a few people would be involved and all this talk about zoos and films isn't very apocalpsy |

"You shall perish, whatever you do! If you are taken with arms in your hands, death! If you beg for mercy, death! Whichever way you turn, right, left, back, forward, up, down, death! You are not merely outside the law, you are outside humanity. Neither age nor sex shall save you and yours. You shall die, but first you shall taste the agony of your wife, your sister, your sons and daughters, even those in the cradle! Before your eyes the wounded man shall be taken out of the ambulance and hacked with bayonets or knocked down with the butt end of a rifle. He shall be dragged living by his broken leg or bleeding arm and flung like a suffering, groaning bundle of refuse into the gutter. Death! Death! Death!"

I WILL CHOP YOUR HEAD OFF! On a more serious note, when the world ends what do you do when you encounter abandoned but functional military hardware. Destroy it so others can't use it? Leave it? Try to use it even if you have no clue how? |

Very good question. Depends on the hostility of things. If the overall environment was pretty hostile, I'd take anything that I'd know how to use, and anything I'd think I could figure out how to use. Not sure about... other stuff, maybe revealing its location to people who you think might use it for good, but as to what "good" even is in such an anarchic scenario is up for debate. I've never thought about destroying military technology before, but that might be pretty fun... |

Frankly, I'd try to horde it all for myself and any allies I might have. Better for you to have all the military technology from a storage depot and not know how to use it than for someone who knows how to use it to take some of the technology and use it against you. |

"Blow it up. Blow it all up..." But seriously, i'd try to figure out how to use it. If it was like, a claymore, and there is absolutely no point in having mines when THEY COME FROM ABOVE, then i'd destroy it. Hopefully. Get him to do it. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed."

I vow to thee my country is for funerals, or for non-religious hymns. Jerusalem is a rubbish song. Rule Britannia is better. Mine would include 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley, 'Fuck You' by Lily Allen, and 'Mr. Blue Sky' by ELO |
