| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. This is basically an expansion of the ole' Zombie plan...meme? Was it a meme? Anyway. What would you do in various apocalyptic scenarios? I'm most interested in your Emberverse plan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emberverse_series Basically, explosions stop working, engines either stop working or become so inefficient they are essentially useless and electricity can't be used. Technological capabilities are catapulted back hundreds of years, how will you survive? Take note, after a while all the food in your local area will be eaten, and assuming you don't live in the arse end of nowhere eventually someone is going to have the bright idea that you can eat people, and you look tasty. I'm pretty lucky, not half an hours walk away there are hills, woodland and farms. I'd try to hide until a winter had passed and most people were dead. I've got a fair knowledge of pre-gunpowder weaponry and survival skills. I used to fashion weapons myself for fun so I'd probably have a better than average chance of making it. I'd try to help a small group of people around my survive so we can rebuild. Assuming no legitimate government emerges and I stay in charge of the group I'd fine somewhere nice and isolated in Britain to consolidate my power and take all of the UK back. I'd head for the island of Holyhead in Wales, secure that, then the larger island of Anglesey. Then Wales, the Midlands, the South of England, the North, Scotland. Then onto Ireland, and the world! Or I'd die horribly over a scrap of food in a ditch. I like to keep my option open. Edited by lamna, Jul 21 2010, 02:37 PM.

The Jurassic Park scenario. Fatass screws everything up, so we need to get the power back on, and hope that the animals and plants don't kill us. |

But nobody lives there, and generally places that have low populations have them for a reason. Like it being a tiny rocky island in the middle of nowhere. Hard to get to, hard to land on, no room to farm, nothing to trade for food, and no other people for, ahem, company. |

Well I don't think a tiny island that could, at best sustain 10 sheep covered in seabird poo would be very romantic, but what ever does it for you. I've always meant to read it but I'd not got round to it. |

I would stay in a cave on a small island in the middle of a lake. Enough plants and small animals for me to eat with no large predators. If I need more to eat, I'll use a log as a makeshift boat, row to the lakeshore, eat enough food, grab some seeds to plant stuff, then row back. People won't even think of coming to my island because its so far from shore. If they see my fire from shore, I'll have plenty of time to prepare defenses to attack them if they try to steal my food. |

Sorry Link, I don't give credit. Come back when you're a little...MMMMMM...Richer. Bread is an animal and humans are %90 aluminum. | |

If I was trapped in Jurassic Park, I'd make a pike and some javelins and take the fight the the enemy. I'd try and dig some earthworks surrounded by stakes for my home. Maybe I was overly pessmistic about Nightingale, but what's wrong with the inhabited islands in Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha? Edited by lamna, Jul 21 2010, 03:09 PM.

Nightingale has only two spots for viable ports and they could only fit a mid sized cargo ship in thus leaving it almost impossible to storm unless they have helicopters

Also making it very hard to leave. Besides, no infrastructure on the island. You'd have to start from scratch. |
