Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

I had no idea hippos did this

Do you think they might be able to take it further and evolve into pig like omnivores?

It's no surprising, since they're related to pigs.
Well... i don't know if they'll survive the age of man, or enough to evolve... i doubt it.
Though i do consider the idea of a pig capable of evolving into a hippo-like omnivore.

Go in there for some odd stuff that could make you puke, and ask for some free sketches. :)

In the Neozoic, pigs evolve into hippo-like carnivores

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

I could see it happening very easily. It would be pretty likely that some would evolve into a crocodilian-mimic niche. Its really easy for them to evolve into this form because requires very little modification. It would be strange to see carnivorous hippos killing wildebeest alongside crocodiles during the seasonal migrations. Given that crocodiles already give hippos some space to avoid attacks, they might live in areas where carnivorous hippos couldn't survive to avoid being eaten by them. Because hippos need more food than an ectothermic animal, they would probably stop living in such large groups to avoid starvation and would be limited to areas with large prey.

Besides the very likely forms, It would be interesting to see coastal shellfish-eating forms.

I think crocodillians are already more efficient in that niche, having a slower metabolism. In addition, its the larger species that seems to have the most carnivore oriented behaviour, and larger species are gone faster.

Hippos could evolve into a croc mimmic niche. There was a video on YouTube about hippo eating a live gazelle.
Projects and concepts that I have stewing around
Extended Pleistocene- An alternate future where man died out, and the megafauna would continue to thrive (may or may not include a bit about certain future sapients)
Inverted World- An alternate timeline where an asteroid hit during the Barremian, causing an extinction event before the Maastrichtian. Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and notosuchians make it to the present, along with a host of other animals.
Badania- Alien planet that has life at a devonian stage of development, except it exists in the present day.
Ido- Alien world where hoppers (derived flightless ballonts) and mouthpart-legged beasts are prevalent.
Leto- Life on a moon orbiting a gas giant with an erratic orbit; experiences extremes of hot and cold.
The Park- ???
Deeper Impact- a world where the K-Pg extinction wipes out crocodilians, mammals, and birds; squamates, choristoderes, and turtles inherit the earth.
World of Equal Opportunity- alternate history where denisovans come across Beringia and interact with native fauna. Much of the Pleistocene fauna survives, and the modern humans that end up crossing into North America do not overhunt the existing animals. 10,000 years later, civilizations exist that are on par with European and Asian societies.
The Ditch- Nothing is what if seems..

But first it would need some obvious body changes, in which time something like an otter or feline could fill the niche.

How about hippos becoming the Ceratopsians of the mammal world?

That could happen, once Africa gets drier, the hippos will evolve tougher skin and their tusks could evolve into horns.

The rhino has nothing to say, because it is a full browser/grazer while the ceratopsians seemed to have either been dedicated tree eaters or omnivores.
