| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. It's actually pretty interesting. It doesn't go into too much detail about a lot of things, and sometimes it gets a little corny or a little unbelievable (they have submarines in one episode, but it looked like it had a computer console, it was ridiculous), but overall it's really good. The artists and writers put a lot of effort into making a unique world with unique cultures and histories that are reflected in just about every aspect of the show, the world is very believable (except for the animals, which get pretty stupid looking sometimes). For instance the capital of the Earth Kingdom is protected by enormous walls that make the Great Wall of China look like a chain-link fence by comparison. There's not a whole lot of actual fighting between the nations shown in the show, but a couple of episodes focused on invasions and specific military missions. I would recommend it, though it doesn't really pick up until after the first season. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

Since the written Language is Chinese, they went with a Chinese pronounciation. Yet most actors were white (we want in more Asian, but not really) I liked the movie. I don't care what anyone says. When you take a whole season of a show with that much detail down to something that short, you have to cut a lot out. That said, I wish he was willing to make it longer and focus on the older fans more, but nope. @Lamna If you have a soul, watch it, if you don't, watch it and you will gain one. ...Too melodramatic? Well, my dad hates cartoons, and he likes it, even if he refuses to admit it. It's actually really good, and at moments very adult. It does deal with political issues of that world, sometimes pretty deep for a half hour show. Plus great comedy and great action, it's probably one of the best shows out there of it's kind. 'The Ember Island Players', was that the one with the Fire Nation propaganda play? |

yes, its hilarious lamna, watch it its great but as parasky said it doesn't kick in to after the first series, the first is still great but the others are better, one of the best factors in it is the character development very little shows have villains/anti heroes as multi faceted as zuko (something that becomes clearer from the 2nd series). the world is fanatastically created, drawing elements from numerous cultures, etc in short its the best cartoon in a long time |

I watched one scene on Youtube, the scene with the imprisoned Earthbenders finally fight back against the firebenders, and I don't get it. In the show the Earthbenders were in an iron prison located on the ocean, in the movie they were on solid ground. In the show Katara gave the speech that encouraged the earthbenders to fight back, in the movie it was Aang and all Katara did in the scene was push a guy(which made no sense), is the director sexist? |

I wish I could give the public a true picture of the queen as she appeared at her best, but this would be impossible, even had she permitted a photograph to be taken, for her charming play of expression while in conversation, the character and intellect which were then revealed, were only half seen when the face was in repose. -Lilias Underwood when speaking of Empress Myeongseong "I was born in the dark. I went out into the light, and your Majesty, it is my displeasure to inform you that I have returned to the dark. I envision a Seoul of towering buildings filled with Western establishments that will place herself back above the Japanese barbarians. Great things lie ahead for the Kingdom, great things. We must take action, your Majesty, without hesitation, to further modernize this still ancient kingdom."-Min Young-ik to Empress Myeongseong | |

Maybe. The racism was BS but sexist is possible. Though I think it was more because of a focus on Aang more then an attempt to exculde Katara. Zuko is a great character, but all the characters grow a lot. Did you see where Katara faces the guy she thinks killed her mother? Plus compare Aang at the end of the series to the beginning, he grows up a lot, and the first time you watch through it's done so settle that you don't even realize it. Then there's Azula. Poor, poor Azula. |

By Cartoon I assume you mean just the western ones, because I really doubt it's going to be better than Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, or Evangelion: 1.0 You are (Not) Alone. Speaking of which, they might finally be getting round to making the live action Evangelion. I'm not getting my hopes up for the retelling yet. But Weta are doing the Special Effects, so it will be worth it just for that. I wonder if Andy Serkis will play the Evas? I might check Avatar out some time, currently I'm almost done watching DearS and Deep Space 9, so after I'm done with them maybe I'll check it out. |

Lamna, you must watch the series, NAOW!!! I'll give a summay of the places in the show. Fire Nation: Industrialized, and shows the bad things that come from pollution. Earth Kingdom: This world's version of the English speaking countries. Namely the U.S., Britain, Canada, Austraila, and New Zealand. Air Nomads: This world's version of the mountainous parts of Eurasia, like China, parts of Mongolia, and Japan. Water Tribes: Based on the Inuit. Except for the Water Tribe located in the Earth Kingdom. That one is based on the Bayou culture. |

Really? I figured it was more like this: Fire Nation: An industrial version of Imperial Japan Earth Kingdom: A combination of Feudal Europe and ancient China Water Tribes: Inuit tribes to the South, some sort of kingdom to the North, and rednecks within the Earth Kingdom (most likely, not "pure" Water-Tribe people) Air Nomads: A civilization composed of Buddhist monks |

It's just the Earth Kingdom symbolism that seems out of place, particularly since they lack most elements of English culture (the only one is their speaking of English). Couple that with how loose the nation-wide government seems, and you've got Feudal Europe. |

The Earth Kingdom is a monarchy, like Britain. It has a creepy intelligence agency that tells the people everything is fine, like the U.S. It has alot of desert, like Australia. It has alot of animals from North America, Australia, and Britain. Namely the aligator, the moose, and the brown bear. |

The Fire Nation is a rather obvious stand in for opressive empires, most of all WWII Japan and current China. It does show pollution is bad, but really, the main bad thing about it is not the destruction of the environment, but about how the empire is structured and how viciously elitistic it is. The Earth nation is generally more benevolent, but they have their own share of assholes. Edited by Carlos, Jul 21 2010, 02:52 PM.

Ahem... *Britain, last time I checked, had a single king. In the Earth Kingdom, they have the Earth King, King Bumi of Omashu, and (most likely) many more kings. Also, in the Avatar Wiki, it's labelled as a "confederate monarchy". *The Dai Li seem only limited to Ba Sing Se, while America's CIA covers most of the world (secretly, of course). *Australia? A lot of places have expanses of desert, not just Australia. In fact, the smooth dunes of the Earth Kingdom's desert reminds me more of the deserts in the Middle East, or perhaps Mongolia. *Keep in mind, the Fire Nation also has a moose. Not to mention, the Earth Kingdom has monkeys, elephants, and native catfish. |

the earth kingdom is more of a symbolisation of china and the US, whereas the fire nation is imperial japan, or communist china, air nomads are/were buddhists, southern water tribe is inuit, northen water tribe is inuit/city-state, sun warriors are aztecs and swamp tribe are some other culture and azula is a good villain, watch 'the beach' hilarious Edited by seascorpion, Jul 21 2010, 03:27 PM.
