Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Are you plausible?

Let's take it easy, guys. To be honest, Avatar, the Na'vi, James Cameron, and pretty much anything related to this topic has been discussed, vilified, defended, denounced, and/or commended in a handful of threads already. Is this going to be yet another one where people become aggressive, divisive, and insulting to the point where admins have to start stepping in?

So Clarke you see yourself as an anti-imperialist,anti-capitalist,communist,tree hugging smurf with its genitals in its hair ?
You all post too fast. >.>

No, I'm not pagan, I'm atheist. I do, however, subscribe to the Gaia theory and the various ways at looking at things that comes along with it.

And yes, I am anti imperialist. I assume most people are anti-imperialist, generally does no good. And I do have a slight communist bent, and indeed rampant capitalism often does quite a bit of harm in my opinion. And I am an environmentalist, as you may have guessed.

I don't know where you got that last one, though. Kind of offensive. :P

Isn't it disturbing that the Pandoran natives use the same implements for sex that they force into their dragons? That's kinda rapey... I wondered why they shouted surprise.

The queues aren't used to mate. Personally I think the queues are useless, unless you want to insta-communicate faster than talking speed.

Same here. I'm a Colonialist. Big difference. I think the home-country should oversee, not rule the colonies. Freedom, Fraternity and Federation is the only way to go. When a responsible government has been formed, they should get home rule.

Yeah, its not like it let people in the iron age skip hundreds of years of development and gave them access to modern technology, medicine, and learning. Or prevented countless pointless deaths in tribal warfare. Or stamped out cannibalism, human sacrifice and slavery. Or give the world several lingua franca allowing greater understanding between peoples. Or spread the Westminster system and democracy in general across the world to regions previously ruled by petty absolute kings at best.

And the queue thing does not seem so odd. When riding a horse you use your hands to guide it, and we use them in sex too.

But don't you know? That side of mine has perished; it was far too weak and stupid to survive in the real world. Peace is not a viable option, not when Yahweh rules the Earth.

I was joking about the Na'vi genocide thing; if they were real beings their death would be pointless and stupid, because they haven't threatened humanity's existence and their reasons - to defend their home - were just and fair. Granted, in the movie they pretty much ruined our existence and their insistence to move out of the way was frankly retarded, but still the humans were pathetic on so many levels. Really, its Cameron's fault for creating so many plot holes.

Still, I would rather preffer the destruction of the franchise. Cameron has become an ecoterrorist just to promote his stupid, cliched movie, and many idiots now think they have nazi Na'vi souls in them. On a second thought, Cameron the idiot might be useful in the future, for my own goals of course.

You misunderstand. Capitalism has its place, but if the government is heavily influenced by capitalism then things can get bad.

Gaia is not pagan, it's looking at the bigger picture and finding a way to describe the net movements of energy and resources. ;) Belief has nothing to do with it.
Or i would denounce it.

Imperialism? I support it on an uninhabitated-planet-conquering mode. No 'slavery' though.

Capitalism doesn't make the banks fail, people do.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Erm, the capitalism has nothing to do with expansionism. There were obviously pre-capitalist empires, and I'd like to find a better description for what the soviets did in Eastern Europe during and right after WW2 than empire building.

And why do people equate it with slavery? Sure that was part of it in the early days, but empires gave people the wealth and the power to ban it, then eradicate it.
When Empire building makes a come back we're not going to forget the lessons of the past any more than the Russians started pogroms again after the fall of the USSR.

Actually, a sex scene was planned where the queues were going to play a very crucial part. That's probably how they could do the nasty while sitting up.

Not to mention, when Jake was playing with his queue, he was told he would "go blind" if he continued. <.<

I really don't care what flaw, but that's all I want, the Na'vi to be flawed. Something, anything, maybe they have lots of suicides (their beleifs make it way more understandable). Or maybe they just have some truley disturbing ways of raising their children.

Or an excuse for why they are so dang 'perfect' would help. How about some species GE the entire planet? Their creators would be interesting to see. Or maybe that living mind all across their planet made them peaceful on purpose through brainwashing or breeding, it's pretty obvious it can do that.

Or maybe put humans in a better light. Maybe we need unobtainium for some reason? Or the company is ran by philanthropists who would use all the money to help the world. Or come up with a better explanation for all the damage done to Earth then saying we did it. Look, we're not the best when it comes to helping our environment, but we're not going to wipe out all life on the planet. We're not that stupid.

Any of that would do. Without it, I hate the story, it's black and white and really annoying. This is all I want, without that, I want to take my anger out on the Na'vi.

But they're jerks. Primitive jerks, too.
There's not much you can do to make primitive jerks look bad.
