Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

15 million years from now, this world looks very different. The resulting Global Warming of Yester Year, has put the Planet on a collision course against itself, in an attempt to reset. As the world heated in the Human Era, attempts at cleaner fuel choices failed, and ultimately the world grew warm, and dry. The Oceans heated, and frozen Methane erupted to the surface resulting a small Ice Age. The result of the madness? The HC-Extinction. Humans died out, as they fought each other for water and various other items. The Final Humans hung to rivers, and eventually died out. The mini Ice Age, would soon send the world into a new era of life, one that is man free. A stronger, and greater Ice Age ripped the planet, but things are set to warm as the final throughs of the Ice Age begin to leave, and a hotter era will soon start, that in turn bringing its own extinctions along.

--

Hi, some of you may remember my last two project, which evidently died out as life got in the way of both. However, I have free time now, for a while, and plan on making a return. This new project; The Future is Barbaric, follows life on Earth 15, 95, and 195 million years into a future after the brought on death of Humanity. This Earth at the starting year, 15 myh, is at the end of a Ice Age, the world is slowly heating, but for now it is relatively cold. Reptiles have taken a massive hit in the Ice Age, and Amphibians hold on to the brink. If there was something on the endangered list during the humans time, then it is extinct. Some large mammals died out during the Human Era, other during the Ice Age. This however, left niches open. And this world is still a world dominated by Mammals.

EDIT:

The World 15 Million Years Hence

Can i see a picture, if that's possible?

And what adaptations has it got to overcome hibernation?
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Well animals hibernate in a cycle I beleive. Small amounts of fruits plants, and ect, causes herbivores to hibernate, with herbivores hibernating, predators go ahead and hibernate. At least I believe thats how it works. Well the Grand Badger's fur grows thicker as it moves north to withstand the cold. In addition, the hunting problem is gone as its superior smelling can help it find hibernating animals, dig them up, and eat. AFterwards they use the den to sleep in for the next few nights, as their metabolism is sower and they dont need much food so quickly. After a few nights they repeat.

Would it be logical for Wolves to be extinct? Because I have a Coyote idea where Coyote packs grow larger and take the role of the Wolf Packs of yester year.

Hmmm...

Well, wolves and coyotes are essentially the same. The wolf's scientific name is Canis lupus while the coyote's is Canis latrans.

Yes, the coyote evolved in North America. But, all in all, they're essentially the same. Plus, coyotes and wolves already occupy the same range.

While the idea is good, the two don't even occupy the same ecological niche. Wolves mainly go after big game, chiefly ungulates. Coyotes mainly go after smaller game, like rabbits, prairie dogs, snakes, you get the idea.

Now, if human civilization goes on for another 200 years or so, I suppose it's possible for wolves to become extinct. Afterall, coyotes breed rather well in human prescence. But it's not very likely.

Sorry to burst your bubble. :)

Most don't, and they have other differences. For example, teeth.

I like wolves, yes. But that post was completely unbiased. Do the research yourself.

Pull up a wikipedia page on both creatures, put them side by side, and read them, making note of advantages and disadvantages of each.

Hmm I see the points mentioned. My idea for the Wolves dieing out, is in the Apocolyptic World(in human standards) humans just dont care for protecting Wolves, and eventually kill them off as they steal to much food, or kill the little remaining live stock. Hmm.

Well, I was thinking of a Hyena-like Raccoon descendant.

And the cats! In the next stage, the much larger grasslands will look like the African Grasslands. And in this stage, they are already coming in.

The Maned Cougar, or Puma Decurro has evolved from the Cougar, or Mountain Lion, or puma, or however you call it in your area. In the colder times, it grew a thicker fur and nowthat it is warming, and after adapting to small social groups of a dominant male, and 3-5 females, the male has kept a larger amount of fur around the neck. As the Lions of Africa the Maned Cougar is an Apex Predator.

We also have the Leopardus Velox, or the Cheetocelot, has evolved from Ocelots which have moved north. It has taken a similiar niche to those of Cheetahs in Africa.

Will post Herbivores soon.

Cougars are definitely the way to go for a new big cat. Sorry I can't say more. I do have a unique idea for it, but I'm going to use it in my project.

Of course, I can let you in on it if you want though.

Hmm you have me intruiged. Tell me more. I will not use the idea in my project.

And yes I understand the mane is very cliche. Hmm, but idk I like :P

By the way, I do understand Ferasl Cats are great adapters, but with the Cougars around I doubt they will take the niche of big cats before the Cougars, who are not indangered, already inhabitat a huge habitat, and are already big cats.

And these cats will be the starting point for a Savanah throughout the Americas in the next part, surrounded by different species of American cats originating from the Cougar, Ocelot, and feral cats.

I notice that I have yet to describe the world.

Overview:

Lower Sea-Levels have given the continents more land area. However, moving has caused shifts in habitats. Eastern Africa has managed to breakoff slightly, causing more water to enter inbetween, which has caused rains to hit the eastern Sahara, and hit the Nile much faster and easier. As far as the area of Egypt, there is swamp there now. Africa has also been moving north, but has moved north in a clockwise motion as well, yes the Gibraltar has been closed through means of Morrocco and southern Iberia colliding, however, the motion of the African continent has made the continent break-off from the Middle East, allowing water to enter the Med. none the less. Of course for now, the water supply is small, however with rising global temperatures that is set to change. India has moved north-east, rising the himalayas even higher than ever. Australia has crashed into New Guinea, and the New Zealand island shave merged into one greater island, Zealandia. With higher water levels, many small islands have risen up. Along with tectonic shifts, itappears Zealandia is going to stay. South America glings by a hair to its northern counter-part.

Africa:

The African Continent is home to new enviroments, the Sahara has become more of a western desert, while in the east, added rainfall have caused a swamp like enviroment. Movement has also caused the western areas to see savanah like enviroments emerge. In the inland is still desert however, and ahuge mountain range appears in the North-Western Tip where it has collided with Iberia. Moving south to its central areas, it is mostly covered in savanah. The clock-wise motion the continent has slightly taken, has made it tilt, causing the southern tip to move slightly westward, and north, while the northern tip, eastward, south. This is very minimal however.

Europe:

The colliding of Africa with Iberia has caused a Moutain range in Iberia, which also caused the drying out of some immediate areas of the Med. around Iberia. Besides that, Iberia, and south-western Europe is covered in small savanahs. The rest is covered in either deciduous forests, taiga, or tundra in the north. The Continent itself is moving westward, however, away from Asia, and eventually Africa.

Asia:

A continent on the move to the East. However something threatens to break it in half. India moving north, has caused tectonic fluctuations, which may cause a break in Asia. (More on Asia later)

Tanzali(East Africa):

Eastern Africa, or Tanzali, has just begun its seperation from the African continent, however it is on a steady pace to the central area of the Indian Ocean. It is mostly covered in Savanah.

Australia:

Australia has collided into Papua New Guinea(spelled right?) which has caused a small mountain range there. besides that its central desert is still there, and besides that it harbors Savanah like enviroments. However, as it moves north into warmer waters, it seems rain is reaching the desert areas much more.

Zealandia:

The New Zealand islands have merged, and with higher water levels, they have given rise to Zealandia, a new mini-continent. Backed by tectonic Fluctuations, a sub-merged area known as Zealandia(I believe) has begun to rise up again. Zealandia packed with its many goats and other such species will begin its move eastward into the Pacific.

South America:

The South American Continent is holding on to its northern brother by its finger-nails. Seperation will become reality in the next few million(maybe thousands) years. Its grand Rainforest, headed by the Amazon River, has died out to marshy Savanah, a savanah with lush lakes, and marshy areas. Further south, the Continents slow movement westward(and a little tiny bit south) has caused tundra like in enviroments in the tip, going into savanah in the mid area. The Andes are still packing strong.

North America:

The North American continent has stayed muchly the same, besides getting colder, and garnering a giant desert. The Central American rainforests have dissapeared. The Carrben Islands however, have begun to move away from the continent, which has caused more water toflow into the Gulf, keeping some swamp area alive.

Carribean Plate(Thought Worth mentioning):

The Carribean Plate has moved to the east, and away from well the Carribean sea. The Islands have solidified and gorwn, many mashing in on eachother. Cuba is now connected to Hispaniola. Puerto Rico is much larger, and the Virgin Islands have become a lon string. The Islands continue to move out into the Atlantic.

Antarctica:

The Antartic Continent has begun to escape its frozen deaths. In this much colder world however, it see's it biomes largely the same. However, its steady rise north into the Indian Ocean will garner it warmer and friendlier biomes as the weather heats.

(What do you guys think? Eventually im looking at the next phase having a seperated Asian Continent, A Europe seperated from the Western Asian Continent, a seperated north and South America, and maybe a collision of Antarctica and Tanzali? Also what are your thoguths on Zealandia moving eastward and hitting the westward bound South Americ. Oh and your thoughts on the Carribean Plates drift?)
