Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

Are you plausible?

Let's not compare and contrast here. It doesn't matter if JohnFaa is better or worse than anyone else. He violated TOS-- as well as having extensive history of TOS violation-- and was banned for 15 days, and that's it. End of story. If he chooses to come back, wonderful. We will benefit from his expertise once again. If he chooses not to return, then it will be his decision.

I mean, exactly how far can you go before you start attracting the attention of the forum administration?

You can pretty much say anything you want around here without being-- as stated in the Terms of Service-- "racist, sexist, derogatory, or threatening." For example, many people have been quite outspoken about this recent action taken, but none of them have had any negative consequence for it. Another example: many people have expressed disagreement with worldviews (for/against Christianity/homosexuality/etc.), and no action has been taken against that. Everyone is free to their opinions in this forum, so long as it doesn't violate TOS. Be respectful of others, even especially when you disagree with them.

Did anyone read the terms? I just clicked agree and skimmed the rules.
It doesn't matter whether you read them or not, you agreed to them by signing up. I like JohnFaa, I really do, he's a great guy and he does have a lot to contribute to the forum. I've tried to allow him to express his distaste of religion and whatever else he doesn't like, so long as he did it in a non-offensive way. But he doesn't do that last part, that one simple thing. He just rants about how he hates them and how they ruin everything and that they deserve to die. I don't really hesitate to make the comparison to Hitler, that's exactly what Hitler did with "undesirables." Of course, JohnFaa doesn't systematically kill all the people he hates in camps, but I'm sorry to say that I can't see him not doing that if ever presented with the opportunity.

And whoever said it is right, how far do you have to go before the administration steps in and does something about it? It's not like I gave him no warnings, I gave him a second, third, and fourth chance. The only option I have left is to exercise my administrative right to ban people.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

You consider him a firned? I don't consider anyone over the internet a friend. Haven't met you.

Lamna will probably be able to back me up on some counts.

Also, I don't think we have any fear of being shut down. I know a site that went to hell in a handbasket and didn't get shut down. It just..imploded. Getting hit by at least three hack attacks didn't help.
One of which was inflicted by the staff itself to spice things up a bit.

That would be me ^_^

I meant to ask how extreme is too extreme? I get the general idea that if someone - especially administration - tells you to stop doing something the first, you stop doing it. But what do you guys consider too extreme in terms of, say...religion? Or homosexuality? Or even swearing, for that matter? Could I potentially make a thread devoted to pointing things out in the Bible that I think are inaccurate or contradictory with how I see things happening in the real world, as long as I don't say anything blatantly insulting about the Bible and those who use it? And what do you consider to be blatantly insulting toward the Bible? See, that sort of thing. In short, exactly where do you draw the line on such topics?

That's acceptable though; it's not offensive, it's an observation. Well, let me rephrase that; it's not intentionally offensive. JohnFaa does and says things that are intentionally offensive, for that very purpose; to offend. That's not cool, not with me nor Zetaboards. I get that some people do not like religion, that's fine, you have the right to believe whatever you want. What you don't have is the right to say whatever you want, not here anyways. If I (or anyone, for that matter) am to keep order in an internet forum full of anonymous members whose only contact with each other is through text, then there must be limits to what can and cannot be expressed.

As I said before, it comes down to respect. Before saying something, take a moment to pause and reverse the situation. If you were to be told what you were about to say to someone (appropriately changed), how would you feel? This isn't foolproof, as some insult is inadvertent, but it's a good rule of thumb.

Respect the person, even though you may disagree. We're all human beings here, and I doubt any of us here aren't trying to better ourselves in one way or another. Respect respect respect.

Or even swearing, for that matter?

My general rule of thumb here is keep it around a PG or PG-13 level. That may not mean anything to people unfamiliar with American movie rating systems, but in short it means if your granny would keel over dead for what you're thinking to say then it's probably best to bite your tongue. ;)

Potentially, yes, though I'm not sure why you'd feel compelled to do that in a forum devoted to speculative evolution. You're sure to get sympathetic minds, but is that the subject we're here for? If so I think I got off at the wrong bus stop. :)

And what do you consider to be blatantly insulting toward the Bible?

As I see it, you can state anything you can verify, or anything that you can explicitly state as your personal opinion. "The Bible is self-contradictory, and I don't see any value in it at all," for example, is very different from, "The Bible is nothing but a waste of dead trees and anybody who buys into its hogwash is an idiot!" How can that last statement be expressed without spreading vitriol (intended or otherwise) to others?

I hope the distinctions are becoming clear.

He's not to happy about having an infection. Otherwise he's calm. I've learned this about him while we were trying to figure out what he ate that could make him sick. His family has a housekeeper.

I think we should consider Uhura's words from Star Trek at times like this.

Lincoln: "What a charming Negress. Oh, forgive me, my dear. I know in my time some used that term as a description of property."
Uhura: "But why should I object to that term, sir? You see, in our century we've learned not to fear words."
