| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. Harris Hawk. They will hunt in cooperative groups of two to six, consisting of family groups. Being social means that they are good for falconry, which means they've been taken overseas, and then inevitably escape into the wild. ...and evolve into batshit crazy aerial super predators? maybe? anyone? |

Maybe not "super-predators" in the sense I'm thinking of, but I imagine we could see refined cooperative hunting, possibly to the extent that a future descendant of the Harris's Hawk hunts prey many times it size. I imagine it would work like this: One hawk harasses and dive-bombs a much larger grazing mammal or flightless bird, causing it to run away. The hawk gives chase, pursuing its victim towards a tree where something like 20 other hawks are waiting. They all attack at the same time, and the prey is killed and eaten on the spot over the course of several days. Basically, winged lions. |

I was probably over-exaggerating when I said super predator, but you get my drift ![]() I imagine they would have pretty high sucess rates on their hunts. It being so hard to outrun a bird and all. Do you reckon they would have any chance of doing better than, say a lion? Apex predator and whatnot? They would be pretty quickly run off a kill by scavengers though I guess... also, sweet pic bexi!

Well they already prey on smaller animals. I'm thinking more along the lines of a pack hunting Haast's Eagle.... |

They could go down that path. But evolution doesn't work in a straight line. Where else could they go? |

Again, let's take the example of the Haast's Eagle. So, if these falcons evolve into a large, aerial predator (not saying Haast Eagle or Teratorn-size), but something between a large vulture and a condor...well, they can become indeed large predators. But for that, they need an environment without large predators. Say, like an island or a place where canids, felines and other large predators disappeared. |

Interesting idea. I myself thought of something like this, only it was a descendant of a hawk or falcon, which began to cooperate amongst members to better hunt Bigbunnies, large rabbits taking the place of extinct plains grazers. |

Check out the teratorns. They won't be able to keep the same hunting tactics due to noit being able to pick things up using their talons, so their baby-feeding must change. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

Flightlessness would be impratical for predators that rely on flight to kill (the talons are more pratical for flying animals), so said predator would most likely be aerial indeed. Also for the teratorn thing, they never had specialised killing feet to begin with, ence why raptors could get away as being bigger |

What if they compromised with a very deinonychosaurian arrangement, with a single and very large "killing claw"? |
