| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! What do you think of this video? Personally I think the creatures are too gaiacentric (all have 2 eyes and the example for a low gravity world looked like centauroid walking sticks), and the high gravity example looked like something I could make in Spore with Creepy and Cute. What people seem to forget is that on Earth there are animals with thin sideways pointing limbs as well as animals with thick columnar legs. The first would seem at home on a low gravity planet, and the second on a high gravity one. Instead, the thin ones (insects) are small and the thick ones (elephants) are large. Build and size are related, and the relationship between build and size depends on gravity. It shifts to the right or the left depending on gravity. |

Yeah... the high gravity creature actually has a Spore Creepy and Cute mouth. And I see what you mean about the eyes... |

OH MY GOD it is a Spore mouth. Jeez, where has originality and randomness gone in the universe? And all the eyes are mammalian design. |

Oh I'm seeing spore parts on all of these things, but also, don't forget, nat.geo. hasn't had a particularly good history of being... well... creative... Any idea where I could catch the rest of this? Ever since I saw the adds for this on TV I've been wanting to see it. ![]()
I'm a little puzzled by what you mean. Wouldn't collum0like legs be useful on a high gravity world, because the benefits of this arrangement is that the legs can support the weight of the body rather than 'lifting' the body. Edited by ItHasTeeth, Apr 25 2010, 11:45 AM.

This video was on National Geographic channel, I think (the Youtube channel). The Spore parts really bug me. If I had time I would go right into Spore and make an exact copy of it. |

Even as old as this video is and how we know today there isn't any complex life on Mars, its waaayy more creative. Edited by Toad of Spades, Apr 25 2010, 02:24 PM.

I love that old Disney piece. Some of it is implausible, but( for examples) the ideas about subterranean life of chemosynthetic ecosystems are nice ideas.

I remember that video from another Youtube vid. Some are implausible, but better than the ones in the video that this topic is about. |

I didn't think the creature examples were that uncreative. It was kind of silly to have the high-gravity creature's legs splayed out from under it, but the insectoid light-gravity looked pretty interesting. It was all pretty Spore-ified, but not exactly so. It looks like they threw it together in Spore then took it a step further in independent graphics programs. |

Yeah, I like the thought of gas-giant type flyers on a non-gas giant world. It's just the mouth of the high gravity creature... |
