Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

...wait, placoderms? As in, those turtle-like vertebrates from the late Permian, could've become tripods?

Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

Penguin one and whale one are OK. Not the greatest, but okay. But seriously: GIVE UP ON THE LAND TRIPODS!

Not trying to be mean, and if I sound mean, I apologize. But there's a thing called plausibility and possilibily. The land tripods possess none of these essential qualities of speculative evolution.

PU: I doubt they would. I was just pointing them out because Nemo Ramjet posited they could. Though, again, I honestly doubt it.

Ok then.
Start off with how much became extinct, and WHY, and HOW.

Yes, we saw it. Still not possible. Again, whale and penguin-like critters are "okay".

And how many times do we have to tell you? The land tripod is, again, IMPOSSIBLE!

Are those the aquatic ones? Because it's still not plausible if it's a land critter. And where are its front legs?

If it's a fully aquatic creature you have a problem: Unless the birds were to thin the eggshells, they can't be viviparous. Then they cannot be fully aquatic. Please, give up on icthyornis. The most it'll be is flying, penguin-like, and seal-like.

So that was a land tripod.

IT IS IMPLAUSIBLE! Please realize that and either end it or make similar creatures in the Habitable Zone.

I see people throwing about "IMPOSSIBLE IMPOSSIBLE". You can't do this you can't do that. Really, what do you know that makes you so sure it is impossible? Improbable is what you're after. This project does not belong to you, it belongs to janlor, so quit the demands to have it changed or moved. Janlor will do that if he chooses, not by your demands, and I think it's pretty clear by now he does not want to give up on this idea. How about adding something more helpful, such as coming up with ways to make it more plausible? There really hasn't been very much of that, a little, but not much.

At the same time, janlor, it would be easier to accept that there will be some parts of your project that will need to be changed to fit it all together nicely. You're not going to be able to get everything you want on here if it is going to all work.

The tripodal icthyornis is possible if it were, say, colonising a new area of land otherwise uninhabited by animals such as tetrapods.

I remember once coming up with an ovoviviparous penguin - nobody piped up about that and said it was impossible, even though plenty commented on it. It is hard to do, there is a low chance of it happening, but it could still happen given enough time and evolution. Such as initial softening of the shelled egg, then moving on from there.

It would probably require them becoming a vast and varied group of animals before this happens, with little competition from other animals such as fish like sharks. But 200 million years of evolution could allow for that to happen. Also, for an incentive to go back to land, you might end up having to sacrifice some of your terrestrial animals that would otherwise prevent the icthyornis from walking on to land. Or, you could isolate them so there are one or two land masses with no competition.

If the aim of this project is to make the world alien in appearance, it will require some implausible ideas to be carried out, some unusual extinctions, but it's within the realm of possibility.

Kaykay, my only problem is that there doesn't seem to be any REASON for why a bird would become a tripedal creature, or something even remotely resembling one. Janlor doesn't give much of one, really. Sure, it was a whale-thing, but WHY would Icthyornis become this? Why would it return to the land? Why would its lower body become a third leg?

Perhaps that is one of the things that could be speculated, helped, ideas given for. No offence to janlor but he seems a little inexperienced at this, and quite young also. Just needs a helping hand, not a bunch of people jumping on top of him just because he didn't think things through as thoroughly as they would have liked.

Maybe icthyornis, already being a sea-fairing bird, had a descendant that became aquatic from a diving ancestor. Hind legs perhaps fused to the tail/body to become more like rudders than feet. It's an idea anyway.
