| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. *head exploding* Implausible. Who cares if it's their favorite food? There's plenty of food in the ocean. And the land echinoderm is implausible! --EDIT-- The land echinoderm is impossible, not implausible. Edited by Pando, May 2 2010, 04:09 PM.

And land lampreys will just get outcompeted by its more advanced cousins, the jawed vertebrates. And their lack of flippers will be a hinderance too their land development too. |

I'll agree with you on the land echinoderms bit Pando. Land lampreys are not a group able to gain dominance, that much I'll agree with. However, I'm not going to push the idea of land lampreys (or land hagfish, whichever suit your fancy) out yet. The most they'd probably get to would be burrowers, sneaking up on prey from underground, probably in swamps. They'd be serpentine, yes. And, at least for the early part of their evolution, need to be kept moist. But they could still evolve. However, seriously competing with bony fish and their progeny? I doubt it. I sincerely doubt it. |

Legless is plausible. But seriously competing against all ony fish for dominance of land? Lampreys are vertebrates, but they don't have hard bone. It's more like cartilage. Soft cartilage. Plus, there's no way jawless can seriously compete with jawed. Except in filter-feeding niches, but that's another story. |
