| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! These are my favorite creations from my De Gamma Project. Here they are:![]() Name: Echinoglossos Phagosilvas (Spiny Tongue, Forest Eater) Home World: De Gamma Type: Grazer Average Height: 15 ft Average Length: 7.34 ft Average Weight: 347 lbs The Toothtongue is an amazing animal which lives in the Canopy Plains; a vast region of De Gamma which has a large flood plane veiled by a canopy of vine-like plants growing fruits and flowers. Its often called the "De Gamman Giraffe" as it does resemble one. It has long, sturdy, muscular legs that hold up its body, and has a long neck to reach the fruit and flowers it feeds on. It has no head, nor a cephalon; just an open neck filled with tongues. The tongues are covered in tiny spikes that help grind up food as it is pulled down into the stomach (like a gizzard in birds). It has few predators, but is defenseless against them. It's three eyes are good for seeing where it is going, but it cannot turn around fast enough to look behind it. Instead, it has developed something other De Gamman creatures barely have; ears. The stalks coming from the front of its body detect even the slightest vibration of the air, and alert the Toothtongue of movement around it. They live in herds, and warn each other of danger by bellowing out of their necks; a sound that is not unlike a very, very loud kazoo. They can run fast, but they turn awkwardly. If they fall over, there is no hope of getting back up. ![]() Name: Gensherbos Flatusmortus (Tribe Plant, Death Breather) Homeworld: De Gamma The Bellow Bulb is an interesting plant, as it is the only known plant in the known galaxy to actually think. Exobotanists are still investigating to see whether it is one incredibly plant or a myriad of plants all working together, but evidence is pointing towards the first theory. The most interesting part is called the Brain Bulb (or BB). The BB contains a mass of nerves that work in a manner similar to a brain in those of animals. There is only one BB per Bellow Bulb, and it is the center of operations for the rest of the plant. It is covered in a thick outer hide that is absolutely covered in tiny spines; like on a cactus. The hide also has tiny balls with thin membranes that contain neurotoxins that cause intense pain upon contact with the skin. Growing from the BB are millions of thick vines. The vines are covered in tiny hair-like structures attached to nerves. When disturbed, they send a relay of electric signals back to the BB and from there it is determined whether something is attacking the plant or whether it is just passing through. If it is the latter, then the Bellow Bulb ignores it, and goes about its photosynthesis. If it is an attack, however, the most amazing of defense systems activate. Hanging from high spots (usually on monophyll trees) are structures called bellows. They look almost like a pitcher plant from Earth, but are far different and serve a far different purpose. When danger befalls the Bellow Bulb, the bellows activate. Small muscle-like tissues in the gill-like slits of the bellows begin to suck in air, then push it out through the larger part; making a terrifyingly loud sound not unlike a French Horn. At first, it appeared to be attempting to scare off the animals, but the truth was far more lethal. Every time a bellow would sound, it was releasing billions of virus-like spores that acted like neurotoxins. If they were inhaled, they would infiltrate the walls of the lungs and paralyze them; resulting in a horrid death. If it came in contact with the skin, it would work its way through the pores and infiltrate the nerves; causing intense pain and in some cases severe nervous system failure. If it worked its way into the blood stream, it would paralyze the two triple-chamber hearts common among De Gamman creatures. The last part of the Bellow Bulb is also very interesting. Called the Bowl Leaf, it grows as tall as a tree, and has a gigantic bowl-like leaf at the top. This leaf is the only part of the Bellow Bulb that undergoes photosynthesis, and transports the nutrients throughout the Bellow Bulb via water tubes in the vines. The Bowl Leaves also collect rain water, seeing as it rains at least once a week at any give spot on De Gamma. The rain water then falls down a "drain" in the middle of the Bowl Leaf and is then transported throughout the Bellow Bulb; taking with it nutrients from the Bowl Leaf itself. Because it is the only part undergoing photosynthesis, it is protected the most; usually surrounded by hundreds of bellows. ![]() Name: Hemaphagos Flammasapien (Blood Eating Fire Thinker) Homeworld: De Gamma Type: Sapient Average Length: 4.98 ft Average Weight: 109 lbs This is one of the two sapients on De Gamma. Named the Nospharatu (meaning vampire in German, as the scientists who discovered it were from Berlin), it is a hemavore (eats only blood), something unseen on Earth. De Gamma has a unique ecosystem; plants that photosynthesize, carnivores/herbivores/omnivores that eat the plants/each other/hemavores, and hemavores that kill the animals and steal the nutrients from them by devouring their blood. Because it only filters blood for its nutrients, and doesn't digest anything, it has no stomach or intestines. It has a "liver stomach", a kind of secondary liver that takes nutrients from consumed blood (unlike the normal liver that filters toxins from the flowing blood). It devours blood by use of a proboscis (called a feeding needle); like a mosquito. The needle is covered in a neurotoxin which paralyzes the prey as the Nospharatu feeds, because the needle doesn't grow back. If the needle breaks, the Nospharatu dies. At some point in their history they had an ancestor which had a jaw, and many tongues (hinting at a omnivore). Now the vestigial tongues have found a purpose as "hands", manipulating the environment. Despite the long, light lets, Nospharatu don't run, the kind of hop forward, like a kangaroo. For this, they have hoof like feet that help propel it forward, and an aerodynamic body to reduce drag. At the end of this body is a tail, and at the end of the tail is a hand like structure (believed to once be a third leg). This is also used to manipulate the environment, and also carry eggs (as they must carry their eggs to keep them warm). They hunt in packs, their three eyes allowing them to lock onto prey as well as see the movements of their fellow hunters. This plays a key role in strategy, as they communicate during hunts by flashing the biolights on the sides of their bodies in different sequences to give orders (flak left/right, move faster, stop, ect). When they need to move very fast, they can eliminate breathing to focus on speed. They do this by opening their nostrils, and allowing air to simply pass through their tunnel-like lungs. While this means they cannot lose their breath, they also cannot stop; because if they stop while in that state they will suffocate. Their biggest achievement is fire. They found a way to weave dry bellow-bulb vines into a torch to scare prey into corners with. They also weave the vines into a dome and cover it in mud; coupled with fire they stay warm in the winter (as they are cold-blooded). They have a special bond with the Hopper (the other sapient) and somewhat rely on them for survival (just as the Hopper survives on the Nospharatu). |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself
