| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous. Join our community today! |

It has recently been drawn to my attention that many of our 275 members are hardly members at all. Inactive accounts, that is, members who have not posted in at least thirty days, flood our ranks and take up our space. While it isn't really a problem, it does skew our statistics and make the forum seem dead (over two hundred members but so little activity?), so I plan to deal with it while I'm motivated. I have sent out a mass email to all members bringing this issue to their attention, and just to clarify I am going to repeat myself here (in big, red letters): STARTING MAY FIRST ALL INACTIVE ACCOUNTS WILL BE DELETED! You will not be able to retrieve a deleted account, so if you are someone who has an account and forgot about the site or couldn't find your way back to the site, log in soon so that you won't lose your account. If you account is deleted, you will just have to suck it up and make a new one. If you are a regular member and log in at least every thirty days and post then you have nothing to fear; your account is not at risk. This statement only applies to those who have, for whatever reason, not contributed to the community despite taking the time to join. So just consider this a friendly reminder that the Speculative Evolution community values your contribution and we hope that many of you inactive people decide to show up and introduce yourselves. We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself

So when is the cutoff date for accounts that haven't posted at all to be deleted? |

(I posted this elsewhere, but feel it bears mentioning here as well.) I just got the e-mail, and a thought came to mind. What if there was some sort of standing policy like this, where an inactivity of, say, a year or something, means that the account is automatically dropped or something. Does that sound like a feasible idea, or too much trouble? Or is that what you intended, Parasky? |

You can set in the Admin CP for all accounts to be deleted after a certain amount of inactivity, or by something else. I forgot what is was, and either I can't find it or only admins can set that so I can't see it. And now you need email confirmation, something that wasn't set when I became a member. I think that you should set it off until May 1st, after that it can go back to email confirmation as it will stop new members. |

Turn off the email activation you mean? I could try that, though bots may join. And accounts become inactive after thirty days of inactivity, so if your account is still inactive by the First of May then I'm deleting it. So if you posted within the last thirty days you will be fine, if not, you account is inactive and you should log in. That's what I said. |

I have been in contact with GBA and know that he is pretty busy, same with Nemo Ramjet (who shouldn't be expected to post regularly anyways), so they are exempt. Saxophlutist, however, hasn't been on since 18 November 2009, nor have I been in contact with Saxo in any other way. |

I'm wondering, are you going to delete accounts that have posted? And if you will, what will happen to the topics that they posted in? What about the topics that they started? If they just disappear that could delete some valuable information in some topics. |
