Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Are you plausible?

Abiogenesis' work has in fact been discussed before, but I don't know if it was ever done in any real depth.

I don't see what he's done that's flying without wings, though...
Take a look at my exobiology subforum of the planet Nereus!

The bioblimp is pretty interesting, and lighter than air travel is definitly possible for organisms. Though I wonder how it might handle changes in temperature or what it lives off of, photosynthesis or possibly filter-feeding aeroplankton?

I really like the birrin, they are very alien yet he has some illustrations with them displaying very human behaviour. I like the one with a human and birrin child interacting.

I'm assuming you mean the picture of a Birrin ethnic cleansing campaign?

Certainly not a nice subject, but not surprising given the general behavior we see in multiple species on Earth.

I found the firearm he or she is holding in that image interesting, anyway. A large part of small arms design is ergonomics and I've always wondered how another sophont's bodyplan would fit in with their own weapons.
A hard mathematical figure provides a sort of enlightenment to one's understanding of an idea that is never matched by mere guesswork.

They were alright, but the aliens looked a little, well, alien. ::)

L'évolution Spéculative est moi

Ah, Abiogenesis, one of my favorite artists on DA. I asked him to join the forum a long time ago, I guess he never did...

I really do enjoy his Birrin concept, which he is making a book out of (which I am purchasing). He seems to have a great talent for designing aliens and their environments in a realistic manner, while retaining a bit of aesthetic integrity. It's almost like he's some kind of nature spirit in human form.
We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar.

"The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming

Could you tell us what the book's called, please? Because I might buy a copy myself...

I love the Bushwhacker, and the Flower Parrotjaws. Mind you, do you think the design is plausible for the latter? Is it possible to have a zero-G environment, naturally occurring, in which life could evolve?

I believe the zero-g environment in his paintings is artificial. I think its part of some grand experiment. However in Larry Niven's The Integral Trees he makes a pretty amazing setting that has life in a naturally occurring zero-g environment.
