| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! A one-eyed leather-winged creature, a fish with tentacular eyestalks, leaves that melted into mush and were pattered like sharp-toothed smile faces, lizards that seemed to be in the form of sticks, a 4-winged bird creature, and an entity with 3 legs, a head of tentacles, and a single, acid-producing feeler covered in globules. |

If you read the book, though, they mention a few other things. Like leaves that look like sharp-toothed smiles, then dissolve into mucus. Or, petrified staff-like lizards. I recommend the book, personally. I feel those illustrations don't do the original work justice. |

I thought they were pretty good. I personally envisaged the triped as being taller and thinner though. |

Maybe something living in a very basic or acidic environment, where water would have dissolving capabilities? |

Can I suggest making this thread about Stephen King-related spec in general, sort of like how I had a thread about Kenneth Oppel? I'm reading another book by Stephen King right now that has "spec-able" creatures in it: Dreamcatcher. If you haven't read the book, the villains in Dreamcatcher are a species of humanoid aliens who release fungus-like spores when they die. These spores, once they land in a host, grow into wormlike creatures called "shit-weasels." The humanoid aliens have a symbiotic relation with the "shit-weasels", who provide them with telepathic communication, but they are fatal to Earth animals. Thoughts? |

I remember that book. But, I wonder: how do the shit-weasels lead to the aliens in that life cycle? |

There is a 'macroverse' commonly existing in Stephen King's universe, where his most dreaded creations are from. The Mist creatures, The Buick8 creatures and also some terrifying creatures mentioned in the Dark Tower series are similar to that of Mist and Buick8 also reside in Macroverse. The "It" also is from the Macroverse, probably spawned all the other creatures, although currently residing in Earth. The Aliens in Dreamcatcher are also related to the Macroverse. |
