Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

After finding the near-compleat works of the horror writer Sheperd King I had an idea. The Mist. It's about... well read it for yourslef here at the bottom of the page. The idea is to give it a good, ol spec treatment, I.E. find out just what the creatures of project arowhead are realy. Most anything that has to do with his works is O.K. however...

The creatures I find implausible for them to bear such resemblance to Earth arthropods, especially so many of them at one place. And I read it on Wikipedia, the ending was horrible. There were 5 people in the car (including his 8 year old son) and he had 4 bullets in his gun that he had, so to spare them from the creatures he shoots and kills them so that they die quicker then walks out, prepared to die, when the army comes! He killed his 8 year old son and 3 other people, only for the army to come and for the reason of the deaths to be in vain!

I rate it R+.

...onesies, it's Stephen King. Not Sheperd.
Twosies, I'd imagine that the Mist was a tap into a very specific ecosystem on an otherwise generalized world. Since most of the creatures bear intense resemblance to Earth organisms, it could be postulated that the creatures are from a radically alternate Earth, and the creatures adjusted accordingly.

So what was the rest of the ecosystem like?

I'm going back to basics.

That must have been the world's stealthiest tank platoon.
Something is upsetting the ostriches.

The rest of the ecosystem was no doubt as vast and as diverse as our own. One thing for sure is that it seems to be ruled by hexapodal vertebrates and bizaare, tentacled arthropods.

Stephen King also had some glimpses into a Lovecraftian ecosystem in the novel From a Buick 8. Those were pretty interesting.

Perhaps they were both from the same planet? Stephen King has been known to perform subtle crossovers (e.g. From a Buick 8 and The Dark Tower series).

Remember my entry in the Huge Creatures competition? That was based on one of the monsters from The Mist. And why was the forum inaccessible for so long?

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

Book ending has them just driving off.
Anyway, interesting book. From what I can remeber, there were the flies, the pterodactyls, the tentacles, the spiders, the thing the killed Olly, and the gigantic things.

Do any of the protagonists survive in the book ending?

The main character survived, but he killed the 5 sub-main characters.

Movie ending. In the book, four characters survive, not getting shot. Talks about them running out of petrol in 90 miles.

Yep, everyone in the car lived in the book. I went to see the movie and loved all but the end - I was depressed for the rest of the day. In addition to the short story I have a book on tape version that is like a radio play - different people voice each character and there is all sorts of "monster noises" for the creatures. One thing about this radio play version (and several recent Japanese horror movies) that I find hilarious is that they use a screaming Siamese cat for one of the monsters. As if no one would recognize THAT distinctive sound! Even more hilarious it was supposed to be one of the spiders in the store
