| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. http://pterosaur-net.blogspot.com/2010/04/actinopatagia-percussion-and-sketchy.html By Mark Witton. I had similar thoughts, but I must say the idea of a jaçana like azhdarchoid never occured to me, presumably because I think ctenochasmatoids could more easily produce something like that. |

I'm going to have flightless pterosaurs as the dominant predators everywhere except Antarctica, Australia, and South America in my Alternative KT Extinctions thread. |

i think that is not possible...mayby at isolated islands...flightless pterosaurs coudl be like monkeys,flamingos.....smaller carnivore forms(hunt mice and something like that) and bigger scavenging form |

For what, Alternative KT or if KT never happened? Because if KT never happened chances are pterosaurs would go extinct as they were in decline or they would be a few giant ones, but in Alternative KT the theropods died out and a whole lot more predators, so the pterosaurs became the apex predators in the Northern Hemisphere. Then some became flightless to be able to kill better, and took over the apex predator niche from the flying pterosaurs, and left the flying pterosaurs with a niche similar to what they had in the late Cretaceous. |

All small pterosaurs were gone by the end cretaceous, and only 2 lineages of pterosaurs remained, while there were hundreds or thousands of birds. But flying piscivores and other giant flying niches would probably be kept by pterosaurs. |

Azhdarchids and Ornithocheroids. Before you post things like that, could you check it out in Wikipedia, and if you still don't know then ask? |

The derived tapejarid reminds me of a concept I drew a while back for a project Faa and I had planned, though mine did not have a split ornament, and mine was drawn a bit better I love those ideas, I'm getting weird visions myself

And neverless within those groups diversity was high. Pteranodontians were far more common than birds like Icthyornis, while not only azhdarchids were adaptable enough and cosmopolitian, they were relatively diverse (forms like Bakonydraco and a unnamed form from the same formation as Quetzalcoatlus were similar to thalassodromids) Also since anurognathids only occur in laggerstaten fossil sites (none dating from the late Cretaceous) and are believed to have appeared in the Triassic its very likely they survived till the end. In fact a great deal of pterosaur taxa only comes from laggerstaten fossil sites, and could easily have been present in the end Edited by Carlos, Apr 5 2010, 05:32 PM.

The thing with pterrosaurs is that they were outcompeted, driven into extinction by flying dinosaurs. I'm not sure how they could survive in flightless forms since the dinosaurs would get them on the ground too. That's what makes The New Dinosaur so unrealistic. |

I noticed Hatzegopteryx was mentioned, didn't that live on an island? I think it would be a good candidate for evolving flightlessness if the K-T extinction never occurred. |
