| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I... was just watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I had this idea. A world in which the main species is a type of fungus/plant or something similar, that covered the ground and the rocks, and that was brown-colored and sweet. It would be like a secondary layer in the planet, consisting in a colonial-type of life, but that it was coincidentialy similar to chocolate in the physical properties. Would the animals taste like their Earth counterparts too? If so, then humans would be the most frightening predators ever to arrive on the planet. This planet is giving me ideas for a Italian food planet inhabited by pasta and pizza flavored creatures. |

Sorry Link, I don't give credit. Come back when you're a little...MMMMMM...Richer. Bread is an animal and humans are %90 aluminum. | |

Depends, does sugar carmelise in jungles? Deserts? And what is the maximum temperature on the planet? |

I just got a GREAT idea for a story. Some space explorers land on a planet like this, and they start to eat from its edible surface. But then it turns out that the whole surface of the planet- the edible part-is actually ONE ORGANISM that uses its taste as bait for its prey. Sorry if I spoiled it, but I'll have it in the Cafe Cosmique soon if you want. |

If the planet is mostly covered by this "chocolate" fungus, then there's a good chance that most creatures would also feed on this chocolate surface. All that sugar in their insides would also cause the creature to taste sweet (NOt completly sweet, but at least sweeter than Earth animals). So yeah, the humans would represent a terrible menace to the planet. |

Hm... when I was hearing about sugars I was thinking "wait what? chocolate isn't very sugary". I mean think about it 100% cocoa is bitter, really bitter, like coffee, and not sweet. I've noticed though, that there are fruits that give the same satisfying flavour and effect as the chocolates with milk and sugar added. Dates are a good example. The fruit of the cacao, the fruit that produces the the cocoa beans, is also sweet with a slight chocolatey taste. If we were to go down the bitter cocoa route, it could perhaps start by being used as a poison, but later as herbivores become more advanced they become more resilient and instead of being poisoned by it are instead only mildly drugged or unaffected. Kind of like koalas with eucalyptus. Or maybe it could be more like sweet diluted chocolate where you have these fruits that have similar after-tastes and effects to chocolate, such as it's fruit the cacao and another example being dates. More likely to encourage consumption, maybe to plant spores or germinate seeds. Maybe a combination of both, if life is diverse enough. Edited by KayKay, Mar 3 2010, 03:31 PM.
