| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! I know this site is a prank but with how GM tech keeps comeing along how long do you think it will be until creatures like genpets realy exist? Could they get lose and breed in the wild? What kinds of effects would the whole thing have. |

All crocodiles start out smaller than kittens, you should not have a problem making a tiny one. I think what is going to hold this back is society, not science. Obviously nobody is going to want pets that are treated like toys, but there will be lots of opposition to regular GM pets. Still as mentioned with the glowing fish, they are already here. I imagine extended lifespans will be the first thing to come that's really popular. It's not going to seem that bad to people on the fence. |

Something like the spore creatures creator where you once finished hit "buy" and it sends an egg for the creature to your home? That could be a looonnngg wait for such tech to be made. |

Extended lifespans... I don't think that would be controversial at all. Although we could also improve vetinary science that much. A real-life creature creator would be awesome. But there better be things in place to prevent kids from creating organisms a la Aliens and getting their parents eaten.

I personaly think that GM could have evolved a lot more quickly should this stupid crisis and the insane conservative christians wouldn't howl shit. In fact, if the moral guardians prove to not be an annoiance, I suppose that 10 years will be enough for genetic engineering to produce great fruits. Recreating dinosaurs seems already very possible, simply activating old genes and rearranging the avian anatomy to the original dinosaurian form; people could already attempt nowadays to recreate proto-whales, the main reason for not doing so is because many people worship blindly cetaceans and because they have a slow reproductive rate (something that, again, can already be dealt with). 10 years from now, genetic engineering could presumably be advanced to do more than just activating old genes, and once we discover the function of every single gene all hell shall break loose. I think that actually creating things from scratch would take still a long time though, since even after we discover ways of modifying an already established design we still would require to design an entire anatomy, something that its a lot harder than designing creatures on Spore |

That might happen anyway a few times before such stuff becomes comanplace. Might be kinda hard to hunt down all the alians, sprigers lovecraften monsters left over after some kid sees a horror movie and starts playing around with their new toy... |

GM could also be used to lower the lethality of certain animals. Everybody thinks that Lionfish are beautiful, but not only is the cost of keeping a saltwater aquarium high, but you also have the poison spines to worry about. With GM, captive-bred Lionfish could become safe. Same goes for creatures like venomous snakes, such as cobras and vipers. Both are beautiful, but quite risky to handle. |

It's not Christians Johnfaa, it's more the new-age movement combined with our culture of mistrusting science, which was not really around in the rather conservative 50's. |

I know, though in modern days its conservative religious groups that oppose scientific development the most |

I'd say it's probably about equal. Hippy seems like a bad term for the group of people I'm talking about but it fits better than "environmentalist" or new ages. More people listen to hippies when they bitch about vaccines, atomic power, space exploration, genetic technology, pesticides, fertilizers etc. Sure the people you are talking about shout a lot but they are less effective. |

eh, making our own genes sounds better than manipulating current ones... current ones are all funky and messed up, really unorganized by human standards -at least from what i know- hippies seem to just oppose structured systems and organizations in general... which as a result means they often end up protesting progress. |
