Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Now, it should be common knowledge that the "Third Eye" truly exists, the Parietal eye. It is found in several Lizards, Frogs, Lampreys, some species of Fish and Sharks, salamanders, some arthropods (though they are analogolous to the Parietal Eye), with the most developed, found in the Tuatara, with with small lens and retina.

Now what if natural selection favored the 'third-eye' , and early Vertebrates developed truly complex third eyes. How would this affect evolution and extinction, and what could today look like...I have a twisted vision, but what do you think ?!

Go on and speculate !

By third eye, do you mean like a Vitamin C collector (like that of the tuatara) or a true third eye that you can see out of?

I asume he means a eye that can be used almost as well as the other two but I'm not sure...

Alright. And Venatosaurus: would the third eye be present in only vertebrates or in all animals with eyes?

Scorpions have four eyes. Two for detecting light concentration which can't be seen, and the two main ones.

But can you give a reason why it should become prevalent?
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

A third eye that is just as capable as the two others, and it would just be in vertebrates.

I have never heard of a real 3rd eye so what are you talking about?

Also if Vertebrates developed 3 eyes it would drasticly change Muscle and skull structures aswell as the brains.

Alright. Thanks for answering.

Atek: the third eye in the tuataras isn't much to look at. In fact, there's nothing to look at. It just aids in vitamin C absorption.

But you're right. Massive cranial and muscular change would be in order.

How would these eyes even be arranged? In a triangle or in a row?

Thanks for the answere.

Also I think the 3rd eye would move toward the Top or back of the head in Herbivores and then be inbetween the other 2 eyes on Predators though it might also be tilted up since the nasal passage is in the way of it's formation.

Also the changes in the head of these organisms might change the muscular structure of the shoulders, front limbs and neck.

Vitamins D and K. Vitamin C in all mammals 'cept humans and guinea pigs.

The entire synapsid/anapdsid/diapsid thing would be different, as the muscle-anchoring holes would have to move. A third optical nerve would force the olfactory epithelium down, making noses lower in the snout and probably making skulls taller.

likely would move brains back further... so a taller, longer skull.

In fact, the cortical and olfactory regions would have to be moved completely.
