| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! A very minor nitpick. I've noticed that EVERYONE seems to portray mosasaurs as trying to prey on pterosaurs, despite the lack of evidence for that. Is it because of that scene in Fantasia? |

They'd have to swoop-dive like gannets or seagulls. |
|
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

They certainly didn't dive gannet style, though simply landing on the sea surface like seagulls could be enough to make them vulnerable to a passing mosasaur |

Could they actually land on water? They had no paddles on their feet and tucking wings in left a lot of space. |

There is evidence of pterosaur swimming, using the four limbs; the question is whereas ctenochasmatoids and dsungaipteroids were the only pterosaurs that swimmed however, as some ornithocheiroids like Pteranodon might had been incapable of hunting fish from the air. If said pterosaurs did swim, most likely the huge wings would be used paddle style, though I don't know how they would take off |

They'd have to get to shore. But surely ornithocheirus or quetzalcouatlus would sink? Their limbs wouldn't be strong enough to support them. |

They could open the wings to stop sinking. I suppose a mixture between the catapult like motion used on land and a paddle like motion would take pterosaurs out of the water, but still I suppose they'd be dependent on the waves and winds to take off from the sea |

With the real biggies, even that wouldn't be enough to take 'em onto the thermals. |
