| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. "Battle for Terra" is an animated movie that had a small release in Spring 2009 and can now be found on DVD. The movie is no "Titan A.E." or "Wall-E" in terms of the quality of writing or animation but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the ecological warning and sci-fi/action tale. (And I do think it tops "Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest"). Many think of it as a precursor to "Avatar" that was released months later. "Terra" tells the story of a heroic alien girl named Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) that helps a wounded human soldier named Jim (Luke Wilson) that crashed down on her home planet after newly arrived humans have started invading and terrorizing the peaceful inhabitants. Mankind is a dying race, living on a spaceship ark for generations after destroying their home planet and neighboring planets with war and resource depletion. Their sights have settled on this planet they named Terra and plan on taking it for themselves, even at the expense of a sentient race living there. It's up to Mala and Jim and his robot navigator (David Cross) and the other planet's inhabitants to stop the invasion led by a power-hungry general (Brian Cox) and broker a peace between their two people. I loved the story but I also loved the environment that the animators created for the film. Species included the Terrians, the sapient and dominant beings on the planet that move around by floating. That's not an original feature on the planet though. There are other animals like the sky whales, leviathans that float past the clouds in the sky. A large plot point was that Terra is not an oxygen-rich planet. I suppose having a helium-based atmosphere is the reason for some many floating-species. By the way, do you know of any plants on Earth that produces a gas OTHER than oxygen? Edited by Yorick, Sep 11 2010, 12:18 AM.

Plants also produce some CO2, btw. As for a helium atmosphere, it wouldn't be producable biologically since it's an inert element. And it wouldn't make floating any easier- lighter atmosphere means you need a lighter lifting gas then even that. In fact, an atmosphere made of CO2 would make for a better environment for floating organisms. |

"Mala" was the name of Chewbacca's wife in Star Wars. I've seen the trailer for that film. The animals look quite interesting, although, if the planet doesn't have much oxygen, then why do the humans want to colonise it? |

The humans had a machine that would terraform the atmosphere some how and make it oxygen-rich, thus hospitable for humans. |

As mentioned before a helium atmosphere would be very hard to float in. Only Hydrogen would work. Remember on Venus you could suspend a city with a bubble of our air. Also I have not seen the film yet, is it Anvilicious? Edited by lamna, Jan 28 2010, 07:32 PM.
