| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! The aim of this project is to create the GMed lifeforms living on Genesis, along with their habitats and ecosystems. I shall provide more information on the sentient races, along with their home worlds, shortly. |

Olo (Sapiolos kharakinsis) Descended from sleek plains runners, the Olo's are considered graceful and majestic by those Terrans that encounter them. They still have a close interconnectedness with nature, despite having some very sophisticated technology. The Olo's are hexapods, with four "hoofed" legs, and two arms, making them almost centaur-like. The hands are quite "human", with four fingers and a thumb on each, although they lack nails. They have a tail, comparitively short against most other Kharak fauna, but still flexible. Their head is bird-like, with a small beak, once used for cropping the long grass which they still eat to this day. However, their diet has changed, to include more meat than before. They farm several species. Kharak has very large continents, but you don't see many Olo buildings on the surface. The majority of their infrastructure and housing can in fact be found underground. The surface is used mainly for farming. No-one is entirely sure as to why this is, not even the Olo themselves. Still, their underground caverns are awash with light and technology. As their planet is subject to a lot of sunlight, their main energy source are solar panels. Their clothing consists primarily of leather, and are usually reserved for functional usage. They construct large spaceships, quite often with areas of mini-savannah. Some colonisation ships even have their own miniature ecosystems and climates. |

I liked the O'lo until the beak came into this. Are you going to do the Corpus dudes? |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

Well, the beak was only because I couldn't think of another way to make a mouth without it being reptilian, as my drawings usually end up looking. The design of the races is open to some adjustment. And no, I won't be doing the Corp-Magnus, at least not yet. They were used to round off the narrative, although after we've got some creature designs going, I could post them as well. Just one more sentient race to do, the Nathaner. After that, I'll start posting some base species, from which we can begin the project. Are there any requests as to which planet we do first? I was thinking of posting five species from each planet, which we can then GM. |

I think Genesis first, then the other planets, so we have a base to jump off. |

No, I think you've misunderstood me, Holbenilord. Since the species that are GMed for Genesis are coming off the homeworlds, we need the original species first. |

I had misunderstood you! Thx. Let's start with one of these here planets then. |

Okay. I'm just waiting for some word back from Empyreon... then we'll get started. ATEK Azul wants to work on the lifeforms from Nathanuk... everyone okay with that, or do you all want to do another planet? |

Shucks, if I'd known you were waiting on me so urgently I wouldn't have gone out of town for the weekend.

I did wonder why you were a while replying... I only ask your advice because, whilst (modesty aside) I know more about biology than any of my classmates, I'm in at the deep end here - my limited stock of knowlegde pales into insignificance, so I need help with things. |

I understand. I used to put my hand up the entire time and give examples or exceptions, then i stopped when i realised no-one, not even i, cared. I don't know everything, so i need help by those specialists like JohnFaa. He knows one helkl of a lot about prehistoric life when i know a little all round. But anyway, the project? |

Ah, yes, erm, hang on... *scrabbles through papers littering computer desk* Here we are... Nathaner (Homo Nathanus) Whilst usually described as an invertebrate, in actual fact the Nathaner (and, indeed, all of the species in their order) are "sub-vertebrates" - they have a very basic endoskeleton, yet still retain a lot of the chitinous plating, that once made up the exoskeleton of their evolutionary ancestors. The Nathaner have, what has been described as, a "lizardy" mouth, a long, slightly-rounded body, and ten, long, flexible limbs. These limbs all end in three digits, which can flatten out to form a "foot", yet are still dexterous enough to function as manipulators, if needs be. Nathanuk is a desert world, with just three continents. The largest two, which are connected by a land bridge, are almost completely urbanised. The planet has some of the largest deposits of oil on any planet yet discovered, and this "black gold" fuelled a resource-grabbing period in Nathaner history, in which nearly every other species on the two continents were made extinct. Wildlife on Nathaner now exists only on an island roughly the size of the British Isles. Although the government has so far managed to keep this island undeveloped, seperate organisations are vying for mining rights, and the government fears that it cannot hold them off for much longer. Therefore, Nathaner's moon has been terraformed, with the help of the Olo's, and the remaining species given a safe haven. However, as a backup, the Nathaner government is using the Genesis project to preserve the life of Nathanuk, even if in a new, genetically modified form. Right, well that's the last of the sentient species out of the way. I'll begin posting animals soon. Edited by Ddraig Goch, Feb 14 2010, 12:04 PM.

On Genesis? Loads. Like the animals, the plants are mainly specific to their own habitats. For example, Terran animals are being placed into the forest environments, and so the trees and other plants there are also of Terran descent. |
