| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. This is quite a strange project. I don't know if this is future evolution or alternative evolution, but I think it's alter. evo. because some species look similar to Dicynodonts and others like Gorgonopsids, so here it is: http://www.themoraeriver.com/ |

I see it now. Thanks. So, is it an island? |

What sort of climate is this continent in? The forests on your website looked Australian - very dry... |

Thanks. By the way, what is the creature in your profile picture? Is it another inhabitant of the Morae River? |

Your avatar looks Mardik-ish. Anyway, thanks for clarifying it up for me.

I've never been entirely clear on exactly what the rules are for scientific nomenclature around here. For example, in my alien project I had a kingdom known as animalia, for the obvious reason that even though the creatures are not genetically related to terrestrial life they behave in much the same way. The name was pointed out as inaccurate. Yet there are examples of unrelated taxa with identical names in real life. I've never been able to see the distinctions in naming rules so I've always come up with original ones just to be safe. |

@ Empreyon - I understand. I had always thought of using the terms with the idea that I was just explaining the physical characteristics of the animal. If it behaves and looks like a carnivore (for example) why not call it that? I'm pulling from latin and greek and so its hard to find word that don't already explain what I'm trying to say about the species. Although I have thought about changing the kingdom too.

A lot of it depends on what they're related to, as well. You mentioned it's not an alien planet. What are we looking at here, alternative evolution? Is this planetwide or localized to the tiny corner of the island, as your map suggests? What (besides the obvious isolation) is causing the life there to change? |

Well, it looks great. Does the semi-arid region span the entire landmass? What size is the landmass? |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

@ Empyreon - Not sure yet. I'm more just plugging in animals and making connections that way. I'm wanting to leave the origins and location of Orcura (the continent) in the dark. For now we are only focusing on this territory which is know as Solturna. If i were to put a new map of Solturna up this would be it along with it in comparison to the rest of the continient its part of - but only the outline (like pictured above) Obviously the "planet" is very earth-like. However, I have no interest in the depicting the rest of the "planet" for the project. The continent that solturna is part of is large - roughly the size of South America to answer your question Holbenilord. I would imagine the rest of the landmass is semi-arid and desert with pockets of forests and wetalands here and there. Edited by Brynn_Metheney, Feb 17 2010, 05:54 PM.

The wetlands probably harbour the most life. I can't remember if you're doing wetlands around the morae river. |

There are wetlands near the end of the river but it mostly flows through grasslands and plains |
