| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. I'm making a fictional island with animals from mid-late cretaceous period north america that survived in there as the island moved to the ecuator in the middle of the pacific ocean. Here's a map: http://lilcthulhu.deviantart.com/art/Lost-Island-Map-146327517 My main problem right now is: Is it plausible for pterosaurs to survive in this island? It looks like a featherless theropod with wings. Back on topic, Lil'Cthulhu do you have any more information on what your going to do with pterosaurs. |

A few ideas only. I've got some giraffe-like pterosaurs, but since the grasslands are flooded, they might feed not only on plants, but also some grassland crabs and other acuatic animals that live under the grassland's water. I also have a small, antelope-sized pterosaur that mainly fishes near the jungle's rivers.

As a matter of fact, that's what they're meant to be (apparently). Lil'Cthulhu, just how random are you willing to make the fauna on this island? Because, if you're looking for something somewhat different - how about a flying frog? |

I didn't read the description but that Frog looks like it came from a horror story(or maybe Cthulu?). |

Nope, apparently it was a concept for the 2005 "Kong" movie. I think the idea was that, given that frogs are pretty much defenseless (without venom), it evolved flight as a means of escape. EDIT; I scanned the picture in from a book, The World of Kong, which has concept ideas for fauna for the 2005 film "Kong" . Edited by Ddraig Goch, Dec 17 2009, 05:50 PM.

Hell, every single animal concept in WOK turns out more silly looking than I imagined |

I'm sure that since the island if full of wet, moisty and humid biomes there's a great variety of anphibious species. Don't know, maybe I'll include the flying frog, but I think it would be more realistic to have venomous frogs, even if I wished for the gliding ones. |

Fair 'nough. For the flooded grasslands, how about a Placodus-like reptile? |

hmmm... placodus? I never though about it. I'll start to work on it but it'll have to wait untill I finish the rest of the concepts. |

I mean, obviously it won't be a Placodus ancestor, because (JohnFaa, correct me if I'm wrong) Placodus and all related species died out in the Triassic. But perhaps some lizard (an iguana, perhaps) would evolve a similar shape and lifestyle. Possibly. When you said "venomous frogs", did you mean that they had a venomous bite? And if so, were they carnivores? |
