| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. I'm making a fictional island with animals from mid-late cretaceous period north america that survived in there as the island moved to the ecuator in the middle of the pacific ocean. Here's a map: http://lilcthulhu.deviantart.com/art/Lost-Island-Map-146327517 My main problem right now is: Is it plausible for pterosaurs to survive in this island? Just out of interest, how are you planning on keeping the island unaffected by KT? I believe, in King Kong (the latest version), the island was relatively alright because of extreme geothermal activity, meaning that cold-blooded species were able to survive the global winter. |

I'll probably put that as an excuse also, but I'm still working on that. There's also something I would really like to discuss: Sea Monsters. In the world of kong, some creatures like the mosasaurs and plesiosaurs survived in the island by becoming fresh-water creatures. Is this plausible? Because if it is I would really like to include those creatures in my island. |

Sorry, just remembered - in King Kong, there were pterosaurs. They were known as "Scissor-Heads" (Axiciacephalus curio), and they were like piscivorous theropods (or, at least, they looked like theropods). Their wings were reduced to flippers, used to aid swimming, although most of the time it hunted like a heron. |

Marine Reptiles could exist but only in a large cut off body of water(unless you want more global changes?). So either your Island has a huge lake with out rivers leading out or you have a subterrainian body of water(most likely fresh) which they are trapped in(which could lead to interesting adaptations). |

Nah, that kind of pterosaur is near imposible. It would take far more million years to develop something like that. Besides, the only pterosaurs that existed by the late cretaceous period were azhdarchids. In the case that this pterosaurs survived in this island and became flightless, they would look and take more giraffe or antelope forms and niches, instead of a theropod-like fish eater. I'm actually working on that, and there's some long giraffe-like creatures in the flooded grasslands as well as some fish eater antelope-like forms. Other thing I would like to discuss (because I have a lot of ideas for this) is the possibility of a carnivorous descendant of the ceratopsids. Not the huge, triceratop-like ceratopsids, but the slender, leptoceratops-like ceratopsids. I recently read that this creatures might have been omnivorous, able to also eat carcass. Is there a possible reason for this creatures to evolve into a different evo path that includes huge carcass eaters or even hunters? |

The only way to get that Ceratopsian is to kill off the Theropods and ground Birds. |

I don't want them to be predators. I want them to be more like vultures, or other type of carcass eaters. |

There's no small theropod in the island that eats carcass as a prime technique. They all hunt. There's only a few birds that eat carcass, and most of them are coastal, eating the rests of pinnepids and other aquatic animals. |

Well then if there aren't to many Carnivores that also scavenge then your animal has a chance. |

Yay. Here's what I've got so far: -The ruined city: *Feral Dogs *Feral Cats *Feral Cattle *Small Antelope Flightless Pterosaurs *Feral Chickens *Introduced Mice and Rats *Small generalisitc raptor -The Jungle: *Therizinosauroid tree browsers *Okapi-like flightless pterosaurs *Generalistic Gigantic Tyrannosaur *Small Forest Ornithopod *Jungle Toothed Birds *Ape-like gliding mammals *Scavenger Ceratopsians -Flooded Grasslands: *Big Grazing Ornithopods *Giraffe-like Flightless Pterosaurs *Hyena-like Raptors *Canine-like Raptors *Grazing Large Ceratopsids -The Swamps: (Still some unelaborated concepts of carnivorous fish but nothing special. There's nothing here) -Highlands: *Lynx-like Raptors -The Coasts: *Pinnepids from the Pacific Ocean *Scavenger Vulture-like Birds As you can see, I still have alot to do. Any suggestions? |

I would start to work on the Lake or Cave systems where the Sea Reptiles are located. But that is just a suggestion. |

Sounds good. Thanks ATEK. By the way, should I make a webpage for this or it's just too soon? |

This island is the size of Hawaii right, is it going to be able to support all those animals? |
