| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Watch this video of the BigDog, and you will know the future has arrived. That's a robot walking, on uneven terrain, recovering from kicks and slips. How cool is that? And this is just the start. They started working on this in 2005. These things could waltz across enemy borders, hide and wait to deliver a payload. If you disguised it you might be able to sneak into enemy camps and gather Intel. It's hardly A T-800 but still, this is stunning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dog Edited by lamna, Dec 8 2009, 11:39 AM.

That's because it's a prototype or a proof of concept. I'm sure it will be quieter in the future. |

I wonder why it's called BigDog, it looks and sounds more like a fly. I like that jump at the end, looked like an antelope jumping. |

That thing makes me feel nauseous. It's an amazing feat, but I just can't seem to like it even if I try to like it. Weird. |

Uncanny Valley. It's almost an Animal, but it's not and so it looks weird. |

It'd be interesting if future concepts could allow us to ride and control them, something akin to a ATV-like Horse ! There is a concept like this somewhere, but this proves we could very well be one the way, as well as on the way to "intelligent" bionic pets ! |

Nice, but I fail to see how this can be used to gather intel. It's far too large, noisy and its movements are unnatural. Also, if spotted, that's never going to make a quick getaway. A small robot on cats might. |

Well yeah and the first cars were noisy, slow, complicated and could only drive on flat surfaces. Technology improves. |
