| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Haematothermia !![]() So I managed to see the Tetrapod Zoology topic on Haematothermia. The idea was published by a man by the name of Søren Løvtrup, he proposed that "birds and mammals are sister-taxa, united by their endothermy, fully divided heart, respiratory turbinates, and by nerve and vascular characters, as well as others." A major proponent of this is Brian Gardiner, who, with Søren Løvtrup, discussed old observations by John Ray and Richard Owen , which both supported the idea of a bird-mammal group that did not include other tetrapods. Obviously this is known to be completely false, as we have a wealth of proof pointing otherwise, but I was wondering, what if something like this were true. What if synapsids ended up dominating and producing 'pseudo-bird/pseudo-dinosaur' forms, and that these 'birds' aren't archosaurs, but mammals ! What would this world look like, and how would evolution affect these odd animals ?! Edited by Venatosaurus, Nov 20 2009, 07:58 PM.

So they would be mammals with feather-like hairs and probably a toothless jaw. Do you think they would evolve an air-sac respiratory system? |

Well I may do a few illustrations of possibilities, but since it is stated that birds came from this group, they would definately have air-sacs I got ideas up my sleeves, but I'll allow to speculate, and in-turn provide more ideas !

I can see alot of possibillities especially if Birds can develope live birth. Also Mammals would be effected to so maybe a Mammal with a Fusion of Mammal and Archosaur breathing systems? Also I posted a bunch of links that could help this project including a ThomasTapir one based on this exact idea. |

Well since they can give birth to live young you would be able to have fully aquatic birds. |

Why would they want bat-style wings? Bird lungs are much more efficient than those of any no-bird dino. |

It's a bit of a silly drawing though. No small mammals have arms that long. |
