| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. As some may know, I've gota series of stories I'm working on, set in the "Black Void" universe. I'm pretty well set on the human aspect of the universe, but may alien aspects aren't too alien. It could just be my lack of artistic skills, but all my aliens look human. So: anyone interested in creating aliens for "Black Void"? If you are, here's some things you need to know:
I'm just telling you things you can do and things I may do so as to avoid confusion. Anyway, have fun! |

I'm liking these designs so far. However, I'm going to interrupt with a personal request. A contest if you will. In one of my stories, a group of about ten people is abducted and taken to a world of traders. The planetary average is about 70 degrees, but where the ten people are, temperature is normally about 100 degrees a day (all temperatures are in Fahrenheit). The world, obviously, is a desert one. What I'm looking for is for multiple designs of a sentient that could live on this desert world, have a space-faring civilization (though I'll determine tech (basically, all sentients at some point discover worm-holes, which is what I'll be giving to this sentient)), and be really big on trade. At the end of the week (next Sunday), I'll put your submissions into a poll and you can all vote on who you think has the best design. I'll be submitting to (just for the fun of it), but, when voting, don't vote for my submission just because it is my submission. The winner's species goes into the story. |

Great! I'll get to work... *scrabbles for paper and wears look of intense concentration* Perhaps they could be sort of like that octopus-starfish thing from that program about alien-planets... there's a thread about it somewhere... |

Here's my sentient desert alien design. Crolbrate A 2 metre long alien, it has a flat worm like body with two arm like stuctures with graspers at the end that were orginally used for feeding but is now also used to manipulate objects. It body slides through the desert sands of it's home world although they are know a space faring species. They are omnivorous eating what they can find on the sparse land and don't need to drink much water. They have have four small eyes o at the front and a toothless mouth. They communicate through a series of humming noises and colour signals since they are able to change colour. They are notorious traders since on their home world they would often trade for food and supplies in they're harsh land was eaiser than going out to find it themselves. In fact they're space craft technology was acquired by trading from already established space faring species. |

Well, they're somewhat genetically immortal if it weren't for the fact that they have to mix-and-split. So, a lone Multipod (I'm gonna name it so, at least to identify it) could die if it misses eleven consecutive mix-and-split seasons. It could also die if it doesn't eat, or if it's killed... Cool. So do these Multipods work only on their own planet, and on space stations, or do some of them live on other planets? *imagines Multipod catching bus to work, wearing bowler hat*

Well, the Multipods can survive in different environments if they're wearing specially designed environment suits. You can picture one working on a Human space station, for example, clad in their elastic, spandex-like environment suit. And I'll make a desert alien as well... Chrysoprassids They live deep under the sands, and started as hibernating beetle-like organisms before their sentience. They have a distinct head which has two complex eyes and four smaller composite eyes, two digging arms, two smaller arms, and two strong jumping legs. Their abdomen is separate from the thorax, and contains only water and food reserves. They are small (three feet at the tallest, two and a half feet average), and they are inherently curious. They are named Chrysoprassids because their abdomen covers look like polished Chrysoprase gems, which is also abundant in their planet. Although they didn't discover space flight, their curiosity sometimes led to sneaking themselves abroad visiting spaceships. This curiosity also drove the development of a skill they are famous for - trading. Since ages long ago, curious Chrysoprassids started trading stuff that strike their curiosity. Now they have perfected the art of trading, and is known across their sector as good traders. Because of their curiosity, they are also regarded as one of the best philosophers, too. |

How do they get water (or whatever they use)? |
|
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

I've got some ideas. A) How do you feel about sentient dinosaurs? Because they're a rather integral part of most of my races. |

Well these are alien species, do you mean a group of dinosaurs managed to get to and survive on another planet? |
