| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! What if they were two pieces of the same asteroid, you know, if it had broken up in space? |

Appearently no one took notice of how I reminded everyone that the most recent models show that the worst thing the indian volcanism could cause would be a climatic change, something dinosaurs survived countless times. Oh well, gotta by some brain cells... I do like the two asteroids thing though. It certainly explains all the damage of the extinction; a single asteroid couldn't had possibly wiped out all the diversity of notosuchians, non-Neornithe birds, all the mammal clades wiped out, the hybodont sharks, the ammonites and pterosaurs (keep in mind that azhdarchids were terrestrial opportunists that feed on relatively unspecialised animals, that nyctosaurids were fucking small by pterodactyloid standards, and that anurognathids and a few other ghost linages could had been present in the very end).
Appearently you didn't noticed how the decline bullshit is pigcrap. Gotta listen to other people sometimes you know Edited by Carlos, Nov 5 2009, 03:22 PM.

I wasn't talking about what the volcanism could have caused (although its not like the conditions would have been NICE) but what the potential asteroid responsible for it would have caused in combination with the Mexican asteroid. And for the record: just because you state something does not make it unequivicably true. I agree with you that volcanism isn't what we are looking for when looking at the KT event, but it could have been one of the many effects of this second (actually first... by 300 000 years) impact. All in all I am looking forward to future research on this topic. |

Randomness and rudeness are completely different, i thought mr all-your-facts-are-wrong would have known that. |

You know, you should attack me, not the facts, because the facts are, well, facts. At most they'd be outdated, but I haven't seen no one complaining about that when David Marjanovic stated that the Deccan Traps only caused a mild climate change |

Argh, this is turning into a blood bath, it was a bad idea for me to start it up. I just like looking deeper into the K-T extinction because an asteroid crashed and they all died just doesn't sound right. Two asteriods crashing with some volcanic activity ( I agree with JohnFaa that the dinosaurs and most of the other species would survive that) all combined would be more likely. |

As far as I can tell they're not saying Indian volcanism was the cause of the dinosaur extinction. What they're saying is that there were two impacts; one in Mexico and then a bigger one in India. The one in India was so violent that it caused rampant volcanism, which contributed to the already-in-place asteroid-induced winter. In other words, neither the volcanism nor the asteroid impact is correct; they're both one in the same. I'll accept that, as that kind of thing happens all the time in science (two opposing theories ending up being two halves of the same whole). And no more fighting over this, or anything else. Speculative Evolution is a forum dedicated to science and scientific discussion; we can debate, but we don't hurl insults at one another, or anyone else for that matter. If you can't handle that, I'll be forced remove you from our presence. And on that note, JohnFaa I'm going to have to ask that you tone it down when you talk about people you dislike. "anti-asteroid motherfuckers" is not necessary; if you don't cool it with the cursing I will put a word filter on. |

We should all aspire to die surrounded by our dearest friends. Just like Julius Caesar. "The Lord Universe said: 'The same fate I have given to all things from stones to stars, that one day they shall become naught but memories aloft upon the winds of time. From dust all was born, and to dust all shall return.' He then looked upon His greatest creation, life, and pitied them, for unlike stars and stones they would soon learn of this fate and despair in the futility of their own existence. And so the Lord Universe decided to give life two gifts to save them from this despair. The first of these gifts was the soul, that life might more readily accept their fate, and the second was fear, that they might in time learn to avoid it altogether." - Excerpt from a Chanagwan creation myth, Legends and Folklore of the Planet Ghar, collected and published by Yieju Bai'an, explorer from the Celestial Commonwealth of Qonming Tree That Owns Itself
