Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! Registration is free and instantaneous.

This is the actual project of the speculation topic that Reedstilt originally posted.

This is a world where man never evolved, and so far no other sapient species has achieved dominance. This takes place 7 myh from this current time, 15 my from when homonids are supposed to have evolved at the longest estimate. For the sake of the project, any species that became extinct during this period of time (8mya - Now) that could have been due to man, we shall attribute to man at the highest extent scientifically possible for that creature, so we have more creatures to manipulate. This does of course mean mammoths. For mammoths, DO NOT GO OVERBOARD. They're basically only just clinging on by a piece of course insulating hair. Same applies to Sabertoothed cats, though they are a bit more successful.

Current members of the project
SIngemeister (Australasia/Oceania)
JohnFaa (South America+Malagsy)
El Squibbonator (North America)
The Dodo (Mauritius + Mascarene Islands)
Dialforthedevil (British Isles + Siberia)
Bexi (Continental Europe)

Please feel free to join, though do ask.

I think this project should focus less on the evolution of other animals without human's interferance, and more on the alternate evolutionary paths that Australopithecus follows instead of becoming sapient. For instance, what if, instead of A. afarensis, A. africanus won out and gave rise to a lineage of large, herbivorous hominids, sort of like the slothman in Man After Man?

In the end, the best advice I could give you would be to do your project in a way that feels natural to you, rather than trying to imitate some geek with a laptop in Colorado.

Well, whoever takes helm of Africa can feel free to mess around with those departments. I think one idea was a carnivorous ape descended from Paranthropus Robustus

Nasty...
You get people like that descended from afarensis though.
Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea.

Madagascar would be an interesting one to do with all the giant lemurs and elephant birds.

What areas are free and what do the taken ones consist of because I know the terms but not the borders?

I think Iceland, New Zealand and Japan would be interesting for those looking for more unique places(If not taken that is).

The uk is great. It's good cos it's not too big but not all the animals will be dwarfs either.
