| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. While unregistered users are able to browse the forum on a basic level, registering an account provides additional forum access not visible to guests as well as the ability to join in discussions and contribute yourself! What if synapsids never evolved? But Diapsids and Anapsids still did. The Permian fauna would change, something will have to take the mammals place during the Mesozoic and mammals certainly wouldn't be ruling today. There would probably be greater diversification in the other two groups, discuss. |

First of all, try not to use the term "anapsid", because they don't really form a true clade (unless you call diapsids anapsids too), which might get confusing. And yes, there's literally thousands of possibilities for such a world |

http://tolweb.org/Amniota/14990 Could The Dodo maybe be be referring to the monophyletic clade anapsida? |

True, though even those may actually just form an unrelated assemblance of groups leading to Diapsida, instead of forming a clade, according to some phylogentic studies |

Interesting thought. So anapsida consists not only of turtles and its extinct cousins, but also of the stem diapsids (actually I mean the things that came right before the diapsids, not sure if I'm expressing that correctly) and their cousins. Hmm what do we call them then? I will just refer to amniotes excluding synapsids as sauropsidans for now. Back to the topic though; the synapsids ruled with an iron fists in the permian and the beginning of the triasic. And while we commonly associate the rise and diversification of the mammals with the demise of the dinosaurs (except for birds), various other synapsid groups diversified plenty before the dinosaurs even existed. So them not existing leaves space for substantial sauropsidan diversification. |

Indeed; Anapsida may not be a natural group, unless Diapsida is within it. |

I know. For all we know perhaps Crurotarsia itself wouldn't evolve, as said groups could become diverse first |

Protorosauria, Simiosauria, Trilophosauria and other bizarre diapsids undergo radiative evolution But maybe this topic could be merged with this one, couldn't it? http://s1.zetaboards.com/Conceptual_Evolution/topic/2422396/ Edited by Jurassic-Gothic, Nov 11 2009, 06:11 PM.

Well merging the topics would be good it also seems that they are going in separate directions and I got stuck(which means merging might as well happen since repterra is based on this). If they do fuse please take my ideas into consideration along with the posts in Repterra. |
