| Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web. Hey everyone. I was hoping you guys could give me a hand. I'm in the middle of a project on another forum called Avalonia Alone, in which Avalonia didn't break up into New England and Western Europe as it did in our world. I've got a general idea for climate, which you'll find in the thread. But I was hoping that you could give me a hand with some of the animals native to the island. My guess is it'd be dominated by multituberculates, with some creatures that are descendants of the last common ancestor of placentals and marsupials. But I'd live some more specifics. If you'd like to help me out, that'd be awesome. Also, if any of you are good artists, I'd love drawings as well. |

Well, the dogs would be hairy and dull-colured, cattle would be more primitive-looking, and other stuff would be different. |

Time flows like a river. Which is to say, downhill. We can tell this because everything is going downhill rapidly. It would seem prudent to be somewhere else when we reach the sea. "It is the old wound my king. It has never healed." | |

So they would be domesticated Multituberculates. |

What function would they be used for? Rabbit hunting? |

I have some species ideas, but I don't know if they'd work so I'm refraining from showing them |

Multituberculate 'rhinos'. Basically they look like huge, digitigrade hyraxes, with horny bosses on their foreheads. They have have flexible lips, which underneath, their incisors have fused to form a pseudobeak. They occur across several enviornments, and can either be grazers, shrub eaters, and very low browsers

Thanks a lot for the idea. If you don't have a drawing, I'll get around to trying to draw one. I think, with the description you've given me, I'd call it the Titigili, a western Avalonian word for "Great Horned Beast." JohnFaa, I'd love to see whatever you have. It doesn't matter if they necessarily work perfectly. We can tweak them if need be. |

For starters, there is a surviving pseudodontorn (aka pelagornithid) in my ideas, with a wingspan of about four meters that took the niche of an aerial scavenger. Has a casque shaped like the crest of a Pteranodon |

I'm glad you like my idea ! I have another idea, such as gargantuan elephant-like multi's. They too have trunks, but are flatte, and their incisors have splayed out and become tusk-like, though some species have shovel be beak-like versions. They are built more like mammoths though and have distinguished toes rather than stubby pads, and some have interesting fur patterns. |

Thanks a lot for those ideas. The pseudodontorn idea definitely works. The elephant-esque animal is a lot harder to visualise, though. Could you possibly sketch it? And another concern that I had about it, and correct me if I'm wrong, but don't animals tend to stay small in forested regions, especially densely forested regions? |

Well, is the entire 'continent' forested, or are there large savannas, grassland etc ? And I'll try my best to draw the animals, lately I've been on brain-fart mode, so my drawing ability is slightly compromised XD I'll try to have something up by the weekend though...But what were you thinking for the continents fauna , it is your creation ? Edit: To get somewhat of an idea of the elephant-like multi's there's this image, though imagine a more vertical neck and sloping back (with longer forelegs) , along with tusks, and a longer flatter trunk Oh and of course a different fur pattern

Okay. Yeah, about forests: I'd say that the vast majority of Avalonia is forested. Any open plains would probably be at higher altitudes, along the mountain ridges and such. I'll do my best to get a biome map up for you guys later on. |

How about Sphenodontia, but the cold will be a problem and they could be outcompeted by squamatas. With the trunked multis maybe they could be a Tapir like animal which lives in forests. |

Well, Sphenodontians seem to be more cold tolerant than similar sized squamates for some reason. Maybe they could be restricted to herbivorous, scavnger and aquatic niches while squamates diversified in othe niches |

The cold could be a concern for both animals, but I think I've got a solution. In Eastern Avalonia, there is a chain of volcanoes, generating their own microclimates. Those reptiles would have no problem living in any of the hot springs or any other such phenomenon generated by the volcanoes. In other news, I've finished the biome map that I promised you. I'll be updating it later on, once I've finished rendering Poland on the map, but I don't think there will be much change. |
