Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Western Europe as an Island

I've once read that a chain of vulcano's on the European mainland threatened to seperate the most western part of Europe (The part containing the Benelux, France, Spain, Portugal and western parts of Germany) from the Eurasian mainland about 15 - 20 million years ago, but for some reason, this never happened.

But what if this seperation did happen? How would life in Western Europe look like today? And how would this affect mankind's evolution and it's further technological development?

Well; mankind would be a bit later in getting into that part of Europe: I'm guessing the eastern migration of humans wouldn't be hindered, so Asia might get a 'leg-up' or Europe this ran-thru.

One thing of interest might be; once humans did get to this island; how might living on a island effect the culture of these folk; over time? How different might the history and cultures be from what we're familar with?

Now here's a project I'd like to get involved into :3

Europe as a whole always had a past seperate from Asia; until well into the Cenozoic the european continent was seperated from Asia by sea, which largely explains the faunal differences between the two continents until the Oligocene.

Whereas Europe remained seperate from Asia since ever or at least western Europe having seperated at that time as you said I think the Mediterranean sea would have never dried up, and the overall climate in Eurasia would be quite different; I don't know if the ciea ages would have the chance of occuring though

Evolutionarily is mankind not said to be but 2 millionish years old?

Yes it is Yoda, but their is no reason why this change would affect the evolution of man in Africa.

Perhaps, depending on whether their is a land brigade or not Neanderthals would not get to this island? I'm fairly sure they never made any sea crossings. Not even across the strait of Gibraltar.

Homo sapiens and the neanderthal evolved somewhere like 700 thousand years ago or so, so I guess we will still have to wonder how they'd get into the island

Well it depends how far away it is and how deep the channel between Western and Eastern Europe is.

If it is relatively shallow and close then the ice age could have connected them like Britain and Mainland Europe.

I am interested in what the changes to Africa's climate will be if the mediterrainian never dried up(though it would effect other things as well).

If the sea never dried up I can see water ways that come from it being more eroded and their for bigger, another thing is that the saharan forest might have had more underground water reserves thanks to more mediterrainian rains through out time allowing it to exist for a longer time span maybe even stopping the Egyptions from forming in the same way.

another thing is that the golf stream might be effected by the new position of land.
I am dyslexic, please ignore the typo's!

Then you should also account the Sardo-Corso-Calabrian complex has never splitted from Iberian plate. And since such event has been decisive in Appennine formation, Italy would not have formed.

And I would not be here to type this... *lol*

Surely so is this an intriguing speculative project :)
