Modern New Zealand is famous for its population of opossums. Its needless to say the possibilities of the future diversity of opossums in these islands.

However, one thing most people here might not know is that quolls were introduced too. And appearently they are beating their placental competitors! This is largely because quolls are more adapted to kill birds than ferrets and cats; whereas birds like wekas, for example, can beat up placental predators, they don't seem to stand a chance against quolls. More adapted to the bird dominated world of New Zealand, quolls could likely replace introduced placentals, offering a more unique linage of predators to New Zealand.

Truly, marsupials seem to have loads of possibilities in the future

I think you mean possum, I think opossum refers to the American marsupials while possum refers to the Australian marsupial and as far as I know only the Australian one has been introduced.

If quolls are going this well in New Zealand they could probably outlive the native Australian ones.

Most likely, if australian quolls are driven to extinction by cane toads

An interesting side note some Australian animals are adapting to the cane toads, some snakes have evolved smaller heads so they won't swallow the toad, some crows have learnt to only eat the non-poisonous part of the toads and I think some quolls have learnt to stay away from them.

Maybe a New Zealand quoll could evolve into something like a thylacoleo.

I can only hope australian fauna gets some sense and avoids getting extinct by them.

I though mostly of marten and fossa analogues, given New Zealand's limited territory, though a truly large species could evolve should somehow the islands form a larger landmass in the future; maybe they'll colide with New Caledonia again

When and where from were Aussie Possums introduced?

What is best in life?

Well they are Common Brushtail Possums so they could have been from almost anywhere in Australia. They were introduced for the fur trade, but I don't know when. Some time between the 1830's and just now I expect.

So many animals hop around the continents these days. Intentionally or not, and they can do quite a bit of damage.

So are Marsupials going into this project and reviving it or is this like a mega dead part of the forum?

I've asked a similar question and apparently the author is to busy with other things.

I just discovered that it will probably be dead for quite a while.

Okay well I wasn't a big fan of the project any way. This topic was the best part of the project in my opinion.

Also is there a way to recycle these sections of the site?

You could write them down, and give them to someone important.

Does this mean the whole Evolutionary Continuum project is shutting down?
