Speculative biology is simultaneously a science and form of art in which one speculates on the possibilities of life and evolution. What could the world look like if dinosaurs had never gone extinct? What could alien lifeforms look like? What kinds of plants and animals might exist in the far future? These questions and more are tackled by speculative biologists, and the Speculative Evolution welcomes all relevant ideas, inquiries, and world-building projects alike. With a member base comprising users from across the world, our community is the largest and longest-running place of gathering for speculative biologists on the web.

Avantir; Earth-like thought-experiment playground

Greetings all. Been caught up in stuff for a while and everyone has probably forgotten who i am now.

Anyway. Since about four years ago, I've been developing a fantasy worldsetting by the name of Avantir... for three of those years it was just another rather crude an cliche fantasy world with All The Usual Fare in terms of creatures and humanoid races. But in the last year my dramatic change in worldveiw, mindset and lifestyle seems to have rubbed off on my fiction projects as well.

Following the planet being more or less stripped down to it's name and a few lingering concepts from "CE" (crap edition) and rebiult from the tectonic plates upwards, it's now become something of a thought-experiment playground for my musings on alternative evolution, "magi-science", and culture/societal experiments. I'm currently writing up some RPG rules in my spare time so as to allow my freinds to explore it in some level of detail not present in the stories I used to write.

The bit of all this that's relevant to all this rambling is, of course, the Alternate Evolution stuff. Avantir's population of what at first appear to be random phantasmagoria are in fact the result of various musings on how certain species could have gone differently, not due to alternate extiction events or lack thereof, but due to alternate geography.
Avantir is more or less exactly the same size as earth, and has the same chemical composition throughout, the same atmosphere, the same distance from it's sol-type sun, etc, but the continents are completely different shapes: Land bridges formed and dissapeared at different times, connecting the analogues to continents on earth and allowing different species migrations and combinations of evolutionary niches.

A good few recogniseable "present earth" animals exist, along with evolutionary cousins and second cousins who have filled the niches of the earth animals that aren't there. Humans (homo sapiens) are also there, alongside three other "cousin" species of near-human (Nirkem, Kruhvite, and Druaq) who evolved from evolutionary continua of Homo Erectus and Neanderthals, and the Lir, another humanoid sapient race who didn't as much evolve as emerge from a rather complex occurance of "Any sufficiently over-analysed magic is indistinguisable from science". As ye'll see later, a few of the alternately-evolved non-humanoid critters have developed a chimpanzee/dolphin/elephant variety of sapience.

This first post is mostly an introduction to keep people occupied while I dig out my notes sometime later this week. (hopefully consisting of some proper species descriptions and some links to rough sketches of the geological history)

Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth.

This really belongs in the alternative evolution actual forum, not JohnFaa's project sub-forum.

But it sounds cool.

Sounds interesting, though its obviously among my things, and therefore it should be moved to somewhere that isn't mine

PM a global mod, and they'll move it.

And it's okay. You're not used to the format of the forum after all. Just don't do it again or...

This sounds very intrigueing and actually unique since I have not heard of life going the same direction with only tectonics making a difference or at least not on a global scale which makes this inspirational and very interesting. B) ;)

I look forward to finding out more about this world and the life in it.
I am dyslexic, please ignore the typo's!
